It is true I most likely wouldn't have read this if it hadn't been written by Jessica Mitford. But I am glad it was written by her because I got the chance to find out how interesting a book about the funeral industry could be! (Also, though I was planning on reading it someday, I may have never gotten around to it had I not found a copy for 50 cents in the used books at the library! Rah!) My mother did get a little (unnecessarily) disconcerted about this book. She seemed to find my reading it "morbid" and then she asked me if I was depressed. (?) Actually, I didn't have the heart to tell her that on my darkest days I am more likely to gravitate towards cheery books. I don't want her to get worried every time she sees me reading a brightly-coloured, quirkily-titled book. ;)

John Hodgman ("I'm a PC" guy) is highly literate. He's also a great big liar and it's ridiculously funny. I learned more about the secret American hobo wars than I could imagine.

This is my first foray into Murakami territory. I enjoyed seven stories out of a collection of 24. Honestly, I would give this book 2 and a half stars if that were an option. It was not a bad book by any means. Murakami is a very capable writer. The stories in this collection were hit and miss. I didn't enjoy his magical realism or whatever term people sometimes use to categorize his work. That being said, there were some gems and therefore the book received three stars instead of two.

At the time I read this book it spoke to me, but after I had a conversation with my husband about it I kind of realized that some of the things the author said about "men wanting to rescue a damsel in distress" were a bit over the top. Overrated book.
I really liked Monica Ali’s debut novel ‘Brick Lane’ but I was worried before I started reading this. It often happens that writers who had a popular debut novel decide to stick to the formula and produce book-club pleasing watered down versions of their debut. Luckily, that’s not the case here. Monica Ali did not want to be locked writing endless ‘sari & curry’ family sagas. She broke free and did something very brave, that is, completely departed from her debut. ‘Azuelejo Blue’ is more of a short story collection disguised as a novel which takes place around a small village in Portugal amongst ex-pats, tourists and locals. This sort of structure is a difficult thing to pull off, and I see from reviews that it didn’t appeal to many people. Personally, I thought it was it quite well done. Monica Ali trusts her reader enormously. She doesn’t explain anything and leaves everything for you to figure out. There is no telling here, just showing. Yes, occasionally it can be confusing but ultimately very satisfying. I would take this over any book whose author assumes I am a halfwit. The cast is very rich and diverse, the writing is superb, and Ali is an extremely imaginative author which is one of the main characteristic I look for in a writer. It wasn’t a perfect book, I felt that Ali should have put more oomph in it but I give her well deserved four stars and I know she has that perfect book in her. (I am not sure if it is that Diana book though, I feel that was done to please the publisher).

We read this book after seeing the anime feature of the same name (which is also very good.) I'm not sure which of the two I prefer, the anime is faithful to the basic story- while at the same time being distinctly Japanese in flavor. The book I felt was clearer in motive and explanation (as is often the case)- but that may be due to it being more "western" in it's storytelling. Howl is a magician who lives in a castle that is constantly moving. It has several door settings- each one opening up to a different "permanent" location. The story centers on a girl who is cursed by a witch... and can only be cured of her curse by Howl. So she takes up a post as a "housecleaner" of sorts, while trying to convince Howl to cure her of the curse.
