Loved the historical fiction aspect - interesting story about the Chicago World's Fair...and the murders going on during that time in Chicago. Recommend it.

I started this book and then dumped my boyfriend. So then I put it down for 2 weeks before I picked it up again, because I was afraid it would be far too... lovey. And yeah, it kind of was, but it was still a good read, an easy February read like The Girl's Guide to Hunting and Fishing, which I cracked out shortly after finishing The Time Traveler's Wife. It's a good Chicago book, I guess. As a fake Chicagoan, I can only pretend to know so much, though, so I guess I can't fairly make that assessment. Uh, spoiler alert? What struck me in particular about TTTW were the multiple, painful miscarriages Claire suffers. As a recent convert to relative adulthood and having even more recently surprised myself with a panic attack based on the thought, "Oh my God, what if I can't have children?", these scenes hit hard, fast, close and real. There are a lot of colors in this book, and nowhere are they as real as in these scenes. Though the future is made apparent midway through the miscarriages, they matter a great deal. With the explicit gimmick of ::poof! I'm off to 1973!:: having long worn off, the present is a painful place to stay, and Ms. Niffenwhatsit keeps you there. Snaps for that.

Interesting story, but nowhere as good as The Secret Life of Bees. I like her writing style and characters, easy read.

Easily in my top 3 of all time. This novel is remarkable and by far the best thing released in the last twenty years. Color comes at you from the pages so hard it leaves knuckle marks on your face. Chabon is sickeningly gifted and the envy of anyone who wishes to write. These characters seep into your skin, you can practically hear them breathing in your ear as you read, they are so alive; his metaphors border on ingenious, his storytelling is masterful. Read this book.

Love, love, love this book. the author just gets to the point and the story flows very quickly, not too quickly that you're lost, but at a perfect pace so you're not wanting to skip pages! My favorite parts are Noah's journaling. And my favorite character is Winona. Although the story is heartbreaking - the sisters story is fun and has a fabulous ending! I can't wait to read Firefly Lane next!

The title makes The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher sound like historical fiction, but in fact it is a nonfiction account of one of the earliest modern police detective's attempts to solve a young child's murder. The downside: this book was a bit dry, sort of like British humor, except with no humor. The upside: I cannot remember why I picked Mr. Whicher to read, but it was interesting and compelling without being at all sensationalized, half true-crime mystery and half slice of history.

I clearly remember reading this in seventh grade and noting that it was the first serious, sad book that I had ever enjoyed.
