Really good murder mystery... Typically not a fan of this type off book, but ready liked out. Ned to read another Gillian Flynn book sometime.

Although I had heard of the Lost Boys, I didn't really know their story. It's really a sad story of loss of country and cultural identity and of not really belonging anywhere. Between the challenges Valentino Achak Deng faced as just a young boy running from terror all around him and then later, learning to navigate in the United States as a refugee are hard to imagine. Eggers tells this story from Valentino's perspective with such authenticity and compassion. Despite everything Valentino goes through, he perseveres. His faith in God and in humanity is truly inspiring.

Victorian New York as only Henry James could show us. There are several movie versions of this beautiful book, but this needs to be read. The complex and bitter relationship between the main character, the plain and gentle Catherine Sloper and her father, the intellectual and cold Dr. Sloper is painful to read, but is worth every word. How do the conventions of her time twist Catherine? Read this book and find out.

Here's book 3 of the Underland Chronicles, and I thought this book (along with book 2) was really strong. For a children's story, it sure brings up some crushingly sober, realistic themes! And, maybe I'm just dense, but I wasn't able to predict what happened in this story or the twists it would take.

This was such a feel-good read. Meg Cabot's books are always hit or miss with me and after reading a few reviews I was worried that I wouldn't like this - but I did! Lizzie's nervous rambling annoyed me for a chapter or two but after that I found that I could really sympathise with her. Being a university student myself I understand the fear of having no idea what to do with my life, and also the horror of discovering that the guy you're debating spending the rest of your life with isn't who you thought he was - or in my case, discovering that my best guy friend has become a stoner who likes going to clubs that play left-wing anti-german rave music. So, yeah, although Lizzie babbled a lot, she was an appealing and realistic character. I'll admit that I didn't laugh out loud at this book I did really enjoy reading it. At the moment I'm studying a lot of 18th century literature for my university course and this was the perfect book to relax with - quick, light and funny. If you're a chick-lit fan - even a semi-secret one like me! - I'd definitely recommend this. Looking forward to reading the next two in the series! 8/10

Lots of fun to match food and literature. My book group does this for each book we read -- the refreshments are based on the book. You must have refreshments for book group, might as well learn a little more about the book through good eating!

Boy, I wish I had noted why I stopped reading this when I tried reading it a year ago. At a friend's recommendation (with explicit qualifications -- it's not literature!), I picked it up a couple of days ago and LOVED it. It's definitely a mass-market thriller, but the writer has a sure hand, and the book -- though dark -- is a good read. My only complaint is that there were two story lines: the primary one involved the Vanger family and their intrigues and crimes, and the secondary one, which was more central to the protagonist personally, involved a corrupt businessman. I couldn't care less about the latter, but fortunately the book was primarily devoted to the Vanger family mysteries. I devoured this the same way I devoured The DaVinci Code, but the DC had the additional intrigue of the church and the Bible, and this did not. This book was probably better written, however. I'm looking forward to reading the other two books in the trilogy, but I'm going to pace myself. I'm hitting a classic next: To Kill a Mockingbird, which I've never read!

I really enjoyed this book. As always, it went directions that I didn't expect. The ending was especially a surprise. I tended to worry constately about what Seth was up to, but it all seemed to work out and be for the best. I am so excited for the last book.

I liked the narrator of this book, a rich Philadelphian who fell in love with the West through dime novels and who penned his own. It was a quick read, but when I got to the end, the book seemed to be missing some depth that I had been looking for but never found.
