I began reading Maggie Stiefvater's stuff when Shiver first came out and haven't been able to stop since. Her writing is beautiful and lyrical, and when I found out she was working on a stand-alone novel I knew that I would have to read it. In The Scorpio Races we are taken on a wild and amazing journey filled with danger. Every year in November the capall uisce, deadly water horses, come from the water and are put in a race along the shore. Sean Kendrick is the remaining champion and Puck Connolly somehow got pulled into competing- as the only girl ever to do so. They both have their reasons for needing to win, and both are taken to the brink to do so. I wasn't really sure at first what to expect from this book, but it was definitely so much more than I could have imagined. Maggie has this ability to take something that could never actually happen and make it seem so real and possible, that you half expect to look out your window and see a capall uisce coming down the street. Her writing is raw and real and incredibly rich. The mythology of the capall usice was masterfully done and uncomfortable at times. They came across as the terrifying creatures they were supposed to be, but beautifully and majestic as well. Of the two main characters I found that Sean spoke to me more. The love and devotion he felt for the horses, especially the capall uisce was so clear. He loved what he did and made no excuses for it. It was almost as though he'd been born in a stable with reigns in his hands. Maggie has a devoted fan in me. From The Wolves of Mercy Falls series to this new novel, she has captivated me with the worlds she creates and the words she uses. I can't wait for more from her!

I want to give this book 3 1/2 stars. I loved the author's style of writing, but I wasn't absolutely hooked by the plot or character development. It ended "to be continued....," so we'll see how the next book develops. Definitely a fun read though.

This was as good if not better than The Da Vinci Code, very similar in many regards. The twists & turns were quite well presented & I had just enough familiarity (or lack thereof) with the places, events, people, etc to have no problem swallowing the details included. It made me think about the Christian religion (a favorite pastime for me, as son of a Baptist minister) & its history & relevancy in our current age of science/reason. That's something I very much appreciate in a work of fiction like this!

This was not hard to read and was quite informative, but it is highly opinionated and biased, although the author's experience lends credence. The prose reads like a machine gun--no flow at all.

This was a giveway on goodreads, as well as self-published debut novel, which is impressive in its own right. The blurb doesn't exactly give away a huge amount about the plot and a part of me is reluctuant to add anything, as I think this is part of the author's point. Having said that, just as a general overview, the overall story is around the concept of a religious diety and his mandates, and the subsequent response of his people to both that mandate and a particular situation that throws into disarray everything about that mandate. Honestly, it took me probably the first half of the book to understand what was going on, and who was who (as the story actually starts about halfway through the middle of the event and then goes back and tells the beginning) but one I did I was engrossed. I won't deny that Loring's writing style is a little bit unusual, and there was some flaws with the editing (I found a few typos) and the general formatting which sometimes made things hard to follow, but overall, I thought it was a great debut and unlike anything I'd come across before. On the scale of Stephenie Meyer to 10, it's a solid 7. :)

This book is wonderful. Seeing the war from a child's eyes is quite a way to see life. Some things were so normal for Anne that you might think it's 2007 and then others were horrid. I do feel bad that I'm reading someones personal diary but what a historical reference. In 2001 David and I went to Dacau, Germany and saw a concentration camp. I cried all day. What an awful place, you could realy feel the death while you were there. The entrance to the camp read work hard and you will be saved (a rough translation from German).

"Sea Change" by Aimee Friedman was an okay book. I liked the book because it was different than most books. It does have a bit of mythology in it which was different for me but it was still relatable. This book is about a girl who is on Selkie Island for the summer experiencing new things. The island has a bit of mystery which makes for some new ideas that people dont normally think of. "Sea Change" is a good book for people who like romance and science.

What do other people's opinions matter compared to your own? We're all different, thus, I feel fine with saying this book was beautiful. This book is infamous for its incest. In fact, the reason I picked it up was because I heard, and I quote, that it was "about a brother and sister who get locked in the attic and start having sex". Yet, if you actually peruse the book, you'll find there's several moments of sexual tension but only one actual sex scene. People are overdramatic. Some people are just disgusted after reading the book. They can't get over the incestuous taboo because it's so ingrained in them. For an open mind like mine, however, it was easy to overcome that and really get myself thinking. What Cathy and Chris had together wasn't disgusting, it was tragic. If an adolescent girl or boy are locked up in an attic together, growing up with no outlet for their sexuality unlike other kids their age, something is going to happen. But it wasn't just lust that drove Cathy and Chris to do what they did. They spent years actually BEING the mother and father to their younger siblings, Cory and Carrie. In their roles, they came to actually love each other, because they weren't living as a brother and sister...they were living as husband and wife. I could feel that. Thus, Flowers in the Attic got me past the social stigma with the way it was written, just as Lolita's beauteous prose had me feeling far from disgust for the pedophilic relationship described. Also, can I speak about Chris for a moment? I love Christopher. He's the only character from a book I've ever fallen for. Imaginative, yet intelligent and pratical...caring, fatherly, husbandly...After reading the Andrews books, I told myself I would name one of my sons Christopher when that time came. You know you're reading something amazing when an author can get you to think differently, to change your mind over something so great. V.C. Andrews did that in this book. She also managed to get me emotionally invested. I felt horror at what the children had to go through, the tarring, the whipping, what happened to poor, poor Cory... I wish the incestuous aspect to this book hadn't leaked out so people wouldn't read it just for shock value or make criticisms on it without even reading it (I have a friend who insists it's a disgusting book, yet she's never even read it to make that judgment rightfully!) But then, if it hadn't, the books still wouldn't be around today. I've read the whole Dollanganger series, three of the Casteel series, and several other V.C. Andrews books. Only Flowers in the Attic, Petals on the Wind, and My Sweet Audrina have captured me. The stories are so different from anything I've ever read that it's refreshing. I thank Andrews for this, too.

Much, much , much better than the movie they based on it. The Beach is a dark tale about a trip to the beach and escaping the over-stimulation of the modern world. I really enjoyed Garland's writing style- it was captivating and exciting. The book had me hooked within a couple of pages and I couldn't put it down until I had read it all the way through.

Recommended to me by my dad after his book club read it. I loved the style of the book. Written as letters to God and then the letters of the sisters to each other. I cried when I got to the last page becasue I didn't want it to end!
