Thinking about publishing a book? Don't do another thing until you read "Publishing & Marketing Realities." It's absolutely terrific. I'd have saved a whole lot of time and energy (and money!) if I'd read this book before I started down the self-publishing path. Having just gone through the process of working with Lulu.com and then with CreateSpace.com and finally creating my own print-on-demand imprint, I can tell you that Christine Rose tells it straight. She's thorough, honest, and funny. This is no "feel-good-you-can-do-anything!" book. Rose gives you the unvarnished truth about how hard it is to publish. She might dissuade you. (If she does, you probably shouldn't try anyway.) But if after you learn what it takes you still want to press ahead, you will be ready. You'll have clear next steps and be eager to take them. I was thrilled to learn that many of the choices I'd made along the way were the right ones. I was stunned to learn how much I still didn't know. And I am forever grateful for the detailed lists of tasks/activities in the Appendix to use as I dive into marketing "Lily Hates Goodbyes" on a big scale. Holding your own published book is a surreal joy. You increase your chances of having that experience if you read Christine Rose's book.

What an intense ride. Everyone in Travis' life either does drugs or drinks, and when he comes home from college (he flunked the semester) for the summer, after ignoring all of his friends, the party immediately picks up. Travis never meets his "perfect" parents expectations, and he can't escape the temptations all around him. He was never the greatest guy in high school, and his bad reputation has followed him everywhere. The heavy drugs and drinking made me feel super uncomfortable especially when I realized there was no end in sight. What would be the breakthrough, I kept asking myself. EXIT HERE isn't a story about happy endings or everything falling into place -- it's just not. Travis has to come to terms with his past, and (I was hoping) escape the bad influences that are all around him. (Like ALL AROUND HIM.) EXIT HERE is dark and completely heartbreaking. Readers who don't mind YAs with a ton of recklessness and adult situations in them should definitely pick this one up. Jason Myers is a fantastic writer, who crafted a FULL story with great character development and so many so many feelings. This book was published in 2007 and I couldn't help but think it's a well-done New Adult in many ways. Kids out of high school and in the real world. Even though these characters made one bad decision after another (and normally this would frustrate me and ruin my reading experience), I was totally captivated and probably could have read EXIT HERE in one sitting.

One of the best books I've read in a long time! "The Help" was a great story of 3 very different women whose stories all seem to meld and connect beautifully together. Hard to put down!

I read this book for the first time in '96. And the again in '97. And '98. And '99. And '99. And '99. I read this book in Graduate School for 6 different classes. It's a good thing I love the book so damn much. Oooh...I think I may want to read it again...I also would recommend "The Hours" to those who loved this book. But I wouldn't recommend "The Hours" without reading Dalloway first.

“Speak” by Laurie Halse Anderson What if something so traumatizing happened to you that you couldn’t accept it, because if you did, you would completely fall apart? What of the people who used to be your best friends now hated your guts? What if the only place you could turn was your own mind? “Speak” by Laurie Halse Anderson tells the story of one girl who goes through all of these problems. Melinda Sordino used to live a pretty normal life. But that was before she busted a party last summer by calling the cops. Now, everyone, even people she doesn’t know, hates her. She can’t even go to her parents for help; they don’t know what her life is like. So, Melinda hides inside her own head. But even that’s not safe, because there’s something she wants to forget about the night of the party. Something that would crush her if she admitted it and let it in. And then Melinda would have to do what she never could - speak the truth. Will Melinda ever find peace? I was deeply touched by “Speak”. The book combines drama, depression, and overwhelming pain. Melinda struggles through the painful horrors of her life, with a bit of inspiration along the way. I would recommend this book to anyone who has ever gone through something that almost broke them or anyone who is going through a rough patch, and needs to know that they are not alone.

Another vampire book--what is wrong with me?
Title: Prom Author: Laurie Halse Anderson Publisher: Viking. 2005, 215 pages, $16.99 ISBN#: 0--670-05974-9 Prom was a little bit more light hearted than Anderson's other books. It portrayed some of the real issues teenagers face when prom rolls around. Unfortunately, the twist in the story where the teacher steals the prom money, is a reality in society today as well. Anderson's Prom characters represent all aspects of the prom. The girls that can't wait for prom, the girls that despise prom, and the guys that are pretty much indifferent. In this book Prom takes place because of a few heroic young people that band together with family and friends to make it happen. This book reminded me alot of the weeks leading up to prom at my children's high school. Prom really is a big deal to a lot of teenager's and a heartbreaking time for others. Prom brings about alot of emotion, heartbreak, happiness, etc. I would not use this book in the classroom because of the objectionable material included in it. I will not be responsible for exposing my student's to this type of material.
