I prefer its alternative title: "The Confessions of Zeno." A fictional character named Zeno--rich, a hypochondriac and a solipsist--writes his autobiography, goaded on by a doctor doing psychoanalysis on him. He talks about his attempts to stop smoking, his father's death, his marriage, wife, mistress and his business partnership with his brother-in-law who later dies while attempting to stage his second fake suicide. Divided into six(6) main chapters, its starts strongly and had it been ended after the first two chapters ("Smoke" and "My Father's Death") I would have given it five stars without hesitation. The humor is purposedly dry (grim even), mocking and cynical. It is like P.G. Wodehouse's Jeeves had become sardonic. Unfortunately, by the third chapter it starts to be a drag. Svevo running out of ammunition, with only some occasional flashes of brilliance here and there. Like in Chapter 3, "Wife and Mistress"-- "Actually a glance of one's own can be remembered as well as a word, perhaps even better. It is more important than a word because in all the dictionary there is no word that can undress a woman. I know now my glance then falsified the words I had conceived, simplifying them. To Ada's eyes, it had tried to penetrate her clothing and also her epidermis. And it had certainly meant: Would you like to come to bed with me at once?" Full of youthful mischief, this was published when Svevo was already sixty-two years old. His book before that, AS A MAN GROWS OLDER, was published when he was relatively young, at age 37. A very unique and likable novel despite its not-too-strong finish.

I really enjoyed this book and the first four of the series. It was a fun and different spin on the whole Vampire scene. I won't review every book in the series, so I'll just voice my overall opinion right here. The biggest pet peeve with this series is how often the books and chapters recount the story over and over again. I understand refreshing the readers memory of things that happened, but introducing each and every charact with their entire life's story EVERY time they are introduced is a bit redundant. I eventually stopped reading the series because of this. Another aspect of the books that eventually turned me off is how much darker every book seems to get. I loved Stevi Ray, and found the idea of red fledglings exicting... but eventually it was just too much drama with too many love interests to keep me interested.

Entertaining, but the character development was flawed - I found it difficult to sympathize and therefore difficult to truly invest in the book.

This narrative is excellent for what the author set out to achieve. Critical to note is things of the spirit are only spiritually discerned hence I do not recommend this as a book for every reader but for those with an inner calling towards the truth of the Holy Scriptures and importantly filled with the Spirit of understanding. It goes beyond mere literature and reveals quite accurately the obedience of a man to a divine calling by the God of Abraham, Yeshua himself. Interestingly it portrays the simplicity and seemingly ordinary life of a couple while trying to achieve a divine mission, the common mistakes we all make and the way in which God divinely guides us and speaks to us. Excellent reading for those called to read it.

Louise reminds me of Fancy Nancy with more depth...in this title, she worries that she won't get straight a's because her teacher is strict. Surely these are feelings that children have had in elementary school and the "lesson" of the story is well served. An aside: my early elementary daughters embrace all of these books...even though I'm slightly lukewarm about them. What do I know!?
