An must read for anyone interested in American history! This is an absolutely fascinating look at the civil rights movement told through the stories of the extremely young African AMerican students -- including both John Lewis and Marion Barry -- who led the movement.

I initially saw author Chris Hedges speak on BookTV about this book, and was enchanted by the fiery invective and seething passion he had for his subject matter. It was a powerful sermon aimed at the "dominionist" movement in fundamental Christianity, led by people like Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson. On the surface, his argument is obvious at points, as this group is already much maligned by mainstream media and the liberal elite. But his perspective is refreshing, as he not only delves into the specific ways that these dominionists afflict the poor, tired, and desperate, but also the ways that their counterparts, the liberal community at large, has aided in their growing powerbase. As he states, the paradox of liberalism is to allow every opinion as valid, no matter how hateful and violent, and thus he does not expect the average liberal mind to have any teeth and power to combat it. He does not make easy targets of the masses of downtrodden souls who make up the movement, often giving them humane descriptions and sympathy for their situation. Hedges refuses to blame the victims, but instead blames the society that created them and the villains who exploit them. While the book is too short and sometimes repetitive, it is a fiery sermon from the Mount, a angry diatribe against a growing threat, and shows the anger and passion that is necessary to make it stop.

What a surprising book. A classic space opera. A mix of old and new. Fun and entertaining with heart. Humorous and touching. Highly recommended even if you don't usually read science fiction. It's more about being human and aging than space exploration and battles.
A little outdated, but it's fun to read about his love of the Sixth Ave. el's marble steps up, and how he can't imagine NYC without it's rumbling above-- I ride it everyday, but it's now the dirty A/C subway line.
Seeing that the author is the same that wrote the famous Twilight series, I had really high hopes for this book. And it didn't completely disappoint. The general storyline was intriguing. Aliens come to earth and invade and take over the human race. It was kind of fun seeing this story told from the alien's perspective. The writing was simple and easy to read. The characters were mostly relatable. And overall it was just a fun, light read. I didn't love it as much as I hoped, but it was still pretty good.

Can't believe I read this...a book club pick...kind of like vegging out in front of cheesy crappy TV.

Not a bad book by any means, just a tad long-winded in it's descriptions of the protagonists' travels across Europe. Will translate beautifully to the cinema, but the story is so plot-driven that you are just dying get to the next chapter/revelation, and you get really annoyed then when the long visual descriptions of each locale interrupt along the way. It's like running along a path that is so filled with beautiful plants and flowers, that they trip you up as you go! Sounds stupid, but best description I can think of. Which is too bad, because the narrative structure is actually very clever, keeps you wanting more, but then frustrates you by not giving it. The ending is a bit trite as well... only read if you are really into vampire fiction.

Really enjoyed this one. The author captures a lot of circumstances wonderfully. The way life changes from how you expect it to go. How circumstances cause close relationships to drift, and unexpected ones to blossom. How circumstances can change us easily into a completely different person (and how you reconcile these two selves). This book will have you reflecting on your own journey -- where you were, where you are, and how to appreciate and come to terms with the now.

My 11th grade English teacher, because he was so excited that I actually read the book (unlike my classmates), accidentally called me "Hester" instead of "Heather" in class and I didn't live it down all year. I did like this book, however. Hawthorne's tale is rich and haunting and more than relevant today. I think I need to re-read this one soon.
