Tiểu Sử David Ben-Gurion (Bìa Mềm) Thư viện Sách hướng dẫn

This is my favourite book. I first read this at 14 as part of my GCE course. It's my failsafe, a constant, I've never been without a copy in over 30 years, and I've lost many, as I've loaned them out but for some reason they're seldom returned. The story's set in post depression Alabama where the narrator (Scout) is the six year old daughter of widowed attorney Atticus Finch. Scout sets the scene; the town, its people, the sad story of its town recluse/weirdo and it's this you settle into and fall in love with before the real story begins. Atticus is called to defend Tom Robinson, a negro (and yeah, get used to that word) accused of raping Mayella Ewell, a girl from a dirt poor white trash family. Atticus' intention to defend Tom Robinson splits the previously unified town because it's a time when white means right, where there are still different churches and buses for whites and blacks. Don't think it's a political book though; it's told through the eyes of a child remember, and a child whose experience of the world hasn't been tainted. Yet. Scout sees the world in absolutes of black and white; something is either right or it's wrong. What's right for one man is right for them all, regardless of race, religion, gender etc, and you can't help but love her for that. It's a time of innocence that makes you sad you can't remember when you stopped being that open, straightforward kid. There's a reason why Harper Lee made this her one and only novel: she knew she couldn't top it.
