I like Sharon McCrumb, and Nora Bonesteel is one of my favorite characters of hers. Her books are set in Appalachia. I remember reading this one a while back and liking it. Mystery, folk lore, tradition and change.

I thought this would be an interesting read for two reasons: 1) It is a narrative from the perspective of a dwarf. 2) She is a German citizen before, during, and after WWII. Not only do you learn some of the troubles that someone growing up as a dwarf may encounter, but those problems begin to seem trivial as Germany finds itself once again at war. Unfortunately, it did not live up to my expectations. The only part of the book that I was able to get into was the way the community reacted to the Nazi regime. The rest of the book seemed slow and word-y. I would not recommend, though I would like to read more about German civilians during WWII.
Scarily relevant.

Anita Blake is an *evolving* character. The changes that she goes through are explained in the universe that Hamilton has created. Blake starts out in this series as an individual whose morality is largely black and white. As the series goes on, she sees herself turning into the "monsters" that she originally started executing. As such, her black and white morality is forced to go through changes. If your worldview was turned upside down by you becoming that which you had feared and loathed, you would have display significant angst as well. Add to this that her sexual mores are turned upside down by the onset of the ardeur, and you have an evolving character who will go through significant changes. This book has interesting secondary characters. This novel introduces the character of Micah. He is an interesting romantic liason for Anita. He doesn't display the cardboard cut-out traits of Richard. As such, he may be more well-suited for Anita over the long-term. Other characters undergo significant changes as well. One of my favorite secondary characters, Dolph, undergoes an anguished transition which makes for good reading. Anita's interactions with the secondary characters make the storyline. For me, the "plot" of the book is not the reason to read this series. This series has had interesting plots. However, this series is more of a soap opera. If you enjoy the characters and the universe Hamilton has created, you will enjoy this book. If you want well-developed, intricate plots, then Hamilton has written other novels which were better in that department (see Obsidian Butterfly). If you want an interesting, fun read that further develops the character of Anita Blake in unusual ways, then purchase the book.
I first discovered Deborah Bedford when I came across A Morning Like This. As soon as I saw her newest title His Other Wife I was excited to read it, having enjoyed her other book so much. Deborah has a wonderful gift of being able to take complex real-life situations that most readers can relate to and put them into riveting novels. Deborah wrote this story loosely based on the biblical story of Hannah. In this novel, Hilary Wynn is the contemporary version of Hannah who experiences tragedy, loss and yearning in her personal life. Hilary is a smart, energetic woman who little by little feels the life sucked out of her through various hardships. Her world comes crashing down and she has to find the resolve to keep on living one day at a time. Hilary endures the ultimate betrayal by her husband and ends up divorced. Just when she thinks she has life under control, she then faces another devastating heartbreak when her 18-year-old son Seth is caught up in a horrific accident on graduation night and arrested. My heart ached for Hilary all the way through this book as she grieved first her marriage and then her son’s mistakes. On top of everything else going on in her life Hilary has to come face to face with her ex-husband’s new wife, who seems to enjoy flaunting her position of “his other wife” in Hilary’s face. For the sake of her son Seth, Hilary grits her teeth and attempts to be civil towards Pam, whose presence is a constant reminder of her marriage to Eric that failed. As they all attempt to get along under one roof for the weekend of Seth’s graduation, Hilary is pushed to the brink many times as she compares herself to Pam and second-guesses her decisions. Pam seems to be able to give Eric everything Hilary wasn’t able to, including another child. Pam also seems to be competing for Seth’s attention and Hilary feels threatened that her relationship with her son may be overshadowed by Pam’s affections and ability to give him more material things. When tragedy strikes and Seth is arrested, Hilary and Eric have to find a way to set their differences aside and unite as parents. Seth faces a murky future and the possibility of prison time. This story is a perfect example of the challenges that many blended families face, and how it takes time to heal and move past heartaches and offenses. If you haven’t had the chance to read Deborah’s books, I highly suggest starting with this one!

Fantastic and phantasmagoric! More than just Harry Potter for adults (by which is meant, no doubt, a superior command of the use of the English language and plot development over Ms Rowling. I see no reason why Juveniles and Young Adult couldnt enjoy this book as well...) this book delivers as a historical period piece as well as a vehicle for magic in the real world. It may prove difficult to swallow some of the Victorian sensibilities, as it were. And certain characters and their motivations tended to grate. Overall though, the book is very enjoyable, both entertaining and cerebral. If you are looking for lots of action and flashy, tidy endings, this may not be for you.

This book was OK, but I felt like it kept repeating the same mantra over and over again. "I like my job, but I'd love to stay home with my baby." God, lady, shut up and quit your job already. I felt like this was this author took a whole bunch of blog posts and mashed them all up into a book. There was no plot or storyline, just a collection of anecdotes. It was OK. I read the entire book, just because I hate not finishing something, and I have a goal to read 75 books this year. I felt I couldn't count this as #23 if I didn't actually get all the way through it. {sigh} But my heart just wasn't in this one.

This series is one of my all time favorites! I remember being lost in these book for hours at a time! What a great way to learn a little bit about what that setting and era was like. Also a way to introduce biography in your classroom.

Good crime novel by Donald E. Westlake under the pseudonym of Richard Stark. At the end of a successful heist, Parker is betrayed by his wife and another gangster, and is shot and left for dead. The novel opens with Parker returning to New York seeking revenge and his money. The description of the Terminator could apply to Parker-' He can't be reasoned with. He doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And he absolutely will not stop, ever, until you are dead.' Parker is an interesting protagonist, there is very little to like about him except courage and determination. He is not seeking justice only retribution. Westlake has written a very tight, fast paced enjoyable novel, which is the basis for the Mel Gibson movie Payback.
