Love this! Totally edge of your seat reading. Total longing for Jace & Clary to be together even though the circumstances - arghhh! there's got to be some twist, please let there be a twist! I'm totally down with Clary & Simon, but JACE, JACE, JACE!!! Jace, Clary, Simon & the shadowhunters are battling with Valentine to keep him from provoking war against shadowhunters & downworlders. Can they succeed? Once again, Cassandra Clare brings her readers into her world of shadowhunting and unconditional love.

An over-sized volume of photographs of gargoyles. Cool old art and architecture; an interesting diversion.

Fiction. Sherlock Holmes, old, creaky, and still on the case. It's a short little mystery about a young boy and his parrot, set in WW II England. Chabon called this a pastiche, but around these parts, it's what we'd refer to as fanfiction. Though the text never specifically refers to Holmes by name, Chabon himself does. I'm not sure what the purpose of that was, but it feels a little coy. I've never read a Sherlock Holmes book, so I'm unable to judge it on that basis, and really the only thing that distinguishes this as Chabon's work are the long rambling sentences filled with parentheticals and ten-dollar words. I'm not even sure the climax answers the plot's question, but when coupled with the book's title, things get eerie, if somewhat vague. Also, be advised, there is a chapter in bird pov. Two stars. I read this because Chabon wrote it, but an interest in Holmes is probably more in order.
If it weren't for the controversy around this book, I probably wouldn't remember it a few years later. I enjoyed Angels and Demons much more, and actually felt it was more controversial. I thought the first 3/4 of the book were pretty good, but the end was a stretch.

First Dorothy Sayers book and I loved it. I'm hunting down the next ones in the series of Lord Peter. How amazingly fun and eccentric and all the while very intelligent and profound is Lord Peter. He reminds me a little of Percy Blakeney from The Scarlet Pimpernel in a whole other range obviously. The criminal was so creepy in this story. So creepy but so much fun. I love Parker and Peter and Bunter too. Really looking forward to the next book.

If not for the ridiculous main character and the negative depiction of feminism this would have been a good book.

I'm still in the middle but it's quite interesting. The book is based on some flashy assumptions but the writing itself sticks to solid research and they do back everything up. Then again, I'm halfway through and the flashy assumptions haven't been mentioned a lot, yet.
