Amazingly this author paints a portrait of a protagonist that we should hate but have difficulty doing so. This seems to have kicked off my Detestable Protagonist set of books.
This edition had great commentary about sources and critical interpretations in the back of the book. The only downside is that if you aren't fluent in Middle English (which I'm not), the way the translated words are set up is kind of tedious. The book itself is very intensive and incredibly complex, but still rewarding if you can get through the whole thing.

Had to read it years ago at uni and it was so damn depressing. Emo, as we'd call it these days! Had to read some of her poetry too for the same module of my literature degree and that was just as emo! Not a criticism of her writing ability, just that the subject matter was as gloomy as hell!

Having been raised surrounded by women and girls, I was quite impressed with the wealth of information here. Boys really are different from girls! Hopefully this helps me understand my son better and raise him into the kind of man girls would kill to have! LOL!

A book that is at once depressing and life affirming. Brilliant. The characters were real for me and I find myself thinking about them frequently.
This is a memoir of Romania's top spy for Stalinism's oddest creations - Nicolai and Elena Ceausescu of Romania. It stays by my bed, as important as my pillow. Anyone drawn to the concept of personality cults as a source of great comedy will find nirvana here. The Ceausescu's were appalling, banal, deluded. They watched old Kojac re-runs night after night in one of 27 palaces; they wiretaped everybody, preferably having sex. They built the second largest building on earth, and one of the ugliest. Elena had stubby yellow teeth, but they did her no good when she was gunned down in 1989. No one could have been more astonished than her at the moment of her execution. Read why.
First off I should come clean and mention back when I was co-running a publishing company we published a few of Jack Everett and David Coles novels. Jack also specifically asked me to review this novel, so take everything I say with a grain of salt. That out of the way this is a timely terrorist thriller set in Britain. Had recent events escalated it is not too far a jump to see events such as those mentioned within this book happening. The story tells of an extremely dramatic terrorist attack and the consequences thereafter. It gives you a very definitive prospective of the authors' view of the reasons behind this action as well as proposing a solution. While you may or may not agree with either it does give you pause to think about. It is an enjoyable read, if you are into these types of stories.

This was a fascinating book that not only told the story of Jackson's rise to power and his 8 years in office, but the story of his successors as well. I gained a new appreciation on a group of US Presidents that I had a limited background on, and found a lot to like about these men and gained a new appreciation on there contributions to the country. The book also surveyed many of the sociological, technological, religious, and medical accomplishments of the era. Jackson is considered to be the first president to spend money on scientific advancement and research, and advancements like the typewriter, camera, and train all came about during the "age of Jackson". As the husband of an ex-mormon I found the survey of Joseph Smith's and Brigham Young's importance to the era interesting. This is an era that I will be studying more closely in the future.

Beautifully written though only one of the stories really stays with me, but it really stays with me. The one about the Russian brother's and the wedding party. Amazing.
