This book would be perfect for a read-aloud scenario where students try to listen and name all the times they hear metaphors, similies, personification and hyperboles. Students will enjoy having this book read to them because it is funny and has an exciting plot.

This is a comic non-fiction book about all the times in history that people thought the end of the world was coming. I didn't actually listen to the book on tape version, but that was the only version they had listed here. Great, funny, good info, lets you know just how stupid people are.

Too pomo for me. Gave up, lost interest, frustrated with the meandering. Plus what she considers to be "central questions" I...don't. And find rather boring by comparison to some other questions.

Some very interesting stuff in here about the way things are done in Japan (e.g., how reporters bribe police officers) and how Adelstein lived his life (e.g., getting a job at the Yomiuri). When it came to the seedy destruction of Adelstein's career and the ending of his friends' lives, though...the narrative fell apart a little. We got less detail, less information, and more emotional distance. I get that it's hard for him to discuss this, but: 1) it's kind of the point of the book -- exposing the things that would get him killed 2) it's kind of the reason people read things like this (if they aren't inherently interested in getting jobs with a Japanese newspaper) -- face it, readership is like the crowd at a gladiatorial event; we want blood!
