Now, this was a great book. The plot moved and the concept was brilliant. This was like a successful version of that miserable book of short stories she wrote. It reminds me of Easy rider, the way the main character travels from group to group, making friends but watching his back. Peter Fonda could have learned from this book to watch his back more.

Be prepared for a really dark view of an apocolyptic future. There's a film version of this coming out soon, but I don't think I ever want to see some of what was described in the novel on screen. It's enough that I read it, pictured it, and can't get it out of my head. It was compelling and disturbing. So much so, that my husband felt he had to read it when I was done.

I'm cheating a little on this one. I had to read it for a qualifying exam... and I passed the exam, so whatever I learned from it has been filed away to make room for the info I need to learn for the next exam. Anyway, I remember liking it a lot, but I agree with Emily that you don't need to read the whole thing. Intro and the first few chapters.

First half of the book gets five stars, but the second half gets only two, so I compromised on three. I wanted to hear Sarah's story, not Julia's. Still worth reading though, if only to learn about a part of World War II history I knew nothing about.

The ironic part is that their father is a vampire hunter. R.L .Stine always puts a twist in his stories and I've always enjoyed reading his books.
