This is Book 2 in Rachel Vincent's series about werecats. Hey, it's not all about werewolves. ;-) In the world of werecats, females are rare, which makes Faythe extremely valuable. She's also the daughter of an Alpha and is being groomed to one day take over the Pride, even though that's not what she wants. She made a promise to stick it out for two years, however, so she's learning the ropes and how to handle enforcer responsibilities. But some past mistakes are going to come back to haunt her. A rogue cat is killing strays, and while the Pride could normally care less about dead strays, someone is calling the Alpha directly to report these kills. Faythe and her sometimes boyfriend Marc head out to investigate. Someone's hunting strays all right, and someone else is hunting the rogue. Faythe discovers a pattern linked to some human disappearances as well and realizes that the situation may be more dangerous than they originally anticipated. In addition, Faythe's old human boyfriend keeps calling, and he's pissed. Faythe will discover she's inadvertently responsible for everything that's happening, and the consequences might be more than she can swallow. My review of the first book, Stray, highlighted Vincent's excellent prose and potential, but thought the plot was laid out a little too much like blocks. I am happy to say her potential is showing through. This book was well paced with the various conflicts interwoven throughout. The story was great, with its own twists and surprises that make it exciting. Faythe's got a lot of issues, primarily relationship issues. Marc loves her and wants to be with her, but Faythe isn't sure she even wants to be with the Pride. She can't have it both ways, however. The Pride's sense of priorities is a little skewed sometimes, which also makes living with them difficult for Faythe. While the plot is resolved, Faythe is in big trouble by the time it's over, and that won't be resolved until the next book, Pride.

Speculative Fiction. Man has been replaced by machine. In a society where everything is mechanized, there's a huge divide between the upper class (engineers and managers) and the lower class (everyone else), and social unrest is in the air. This is Vonnegut's first novel, and not his most accessible. It's dense and kind of slow compared to his other books, though it still has moments of brilliant absurdity. If you've never read Vonnegut before, this is not the place to start. If you're familiar with his works, give it a try, but I found it more of academic interest than literary -- seeing the beginning of things that would eventually develop into Vonnegut's trademark style.

Could not even finish reading this book. The story started out well, had a good plot but became so ridiculous I felt silly just reading it. Not enjoyable at all.

JK Rowling is really a wonderful author. This book left me feeling so satisfied and through out the 750 pages I never knew what was going to happen next. The way she's able to tie 7 books together and fill them with twists and turns but still answer all my questions in the end, it's pretty amazing. I am sad to see the series end, but I was left feeling fulfilled when I finished this book.

** spoiler alert ** "Has it got any sports in it?" "Fencing. Fighting. Torture. Poison. True love. Hate. Revenge. Giants. Hunters. Bad men. Good men. Beautifulest ladies. Snakes. Spiders. Beasts of all natures and descriptions. Pain. Death. Brave men. Coward men. Strongest men. Chases. Escapes. Lies. Truths. Passion. Miracles." A tale of swashbuckling adventure and true love (TM) I've watched the movie before, and I chuckled quite a lot whenever I read those scenes that I recognized in the book. Crackling and memorable dialogue that made me laugh out loud at times. "Life is pain, anyone who tells you otherwise is selling you something", hah. As for the author "abridgement" notes (it has been stated elsewhere by people that Florin is in fact a fictional place is this is an original novel, not an abridgement, William Goldman probably just wanted to make it as if he's really abridging a book to gripe about the industry ), some may find it annoying, but I found them acceptable till near the end. It was at about 4/5 of the book though that I lost patience slightly and started skipping through. If you feel that he's rambling too much, feel free to skip, it doesn't detract much from the story, and the rest of the story is good fun. One gripe I have: it's slightly annoying that the book ends with the first chapter of the supposed sequel ("Buttercup's Baby") and leaves us with cliffhangers everywhere. It's worse as the sequel would probably never be published. If you hate unresolved cliffhangers, stop reading after the story of Princess Bride ends and skip the last fifth of the book.

This was a really good what I call full fledged fantasy. Most fantasy writers get caught up in the details of their created world but the action kept rolling in this! (oh and the movie BUTCHERED it)

I find that Sparhawk is a little bit more to my taste and this might just be a complete whim, because the similarity between Eddings' other series is staggering. His writing his formulaic, but I find his treatment of Sparkhawk, Ehlana and the other major players in this series is a bit more human and a bit less formula. The characters evolve ever so slightly and I actually believe in the relationship between Sparhawk and Ehlana, which is something I couldn't say for any of the romances in the other series. It's epic fantasy with a plethora of gods and a quest for a magical item to save the queen who is deathly ill and only still living due to her magical encasement in crystal. Nothing really innovative here, but a little bit less condescending to the readers than the former series. I can't find the boxed set of The Tamuli here, so I will just sum it up in a few words. Don't read it; it's just Eddings beating a dead horse; hopefully not Sparhawk's horse, Faran though, I quite liked him.

Looking forward to discussing this on Saturday with my sisters-in-law and my mother-in-law. All four of us love books and pick out two books a year (about the only two times the whole family is together) and we head to a coffee shop, discuss the book, stay too long and then head back to all the boys (and little Sarah). I think this is our 4th? 5th? book? Good book for discussion. I'm not sure if I would call myself a Beth Moore fan yet--this is the first of hers I've ever read--but it was definitely worthwhile. For me at least. I hope to read through this again with others....
