could have been funnier, but unfortunately, it wasn't.

I liked the idea for this book, but that's about it. Between the horribly confusing metaphysics of the story and the extreme willing suspension of disbelief that the more mundane characters had towards the extraordinary left me kinda meh overall.

As other reviewers have noted, The Spanish Civil War is not an easy war to write about. So many factions, so many events, all occurring at the same time that any book that attempts to do them justice would be monolithic (such as Hugh Thomas' definitive tome). Beevor struggles against the mountain of detail but still manages to provide a decent retelling of the events, but without the heart that embodied Spain of that time.

This work is an autobiography of a woman, Edith Hahn, who survived in Austria and Germany during WWII. I read this book right after reading The Holocaust Industry, so I wonder if some of my reaction to the book was colored by some of the issues Finkelstein brought up. The book was unusual - Hahn wasn't in a camp, and she wasn't in hiding in the way Anne Frank did. Instead, she managed to work the system, finding people to help her (often people who weren't family or close friends, and a lot of strangers seemed to be angels in disguise). Eventually, she had papers to prove that she was Ayran and married a man who was in the Nazi party. After so much hardship, she eventually sees her part of Germany liberated by the Soviets and for a brief time, enjoys the life she was striving for before the Nazis took over Austria: a judge and a mother. Hahn's story was written much after the events occurred, and even though she did have a bunch of old letters and documents to help refresh her memories, I wondered how much of her story was influenced by hindsight. Her thoughts during her hiding had references and insights that I doubted she would have had at the time. Hahn had a strange mix of naivity and wisdom during her twenties that I think owed a lot to the story being written in her old age.

Of all the series, this is my absolute favorite. The most profound look at the emotions and thoughts of Harry as well as those around him. The way that Rowling escalated the cast of characters in this book, made the movie version that much more disappointing.

I really liked it. Everything I said about The Hunger Games can be said about this. The pacing is decent, the later parts are intense, the internal conflict is interesting, the only thing that I was bothered by was the ending. I won't spoil it, but the ending was honestly kind of dumb.

Read this before I began to allow myself to abandon books, some do not need to be finished. This was one of them!

Ah a semi-comedic swipe at organized religion in the form of a coming of age story about god's daughter who is as confused as one would expect but never gets over it. Entertaining enough to read, but not what I'd expected from an award winning author. None of the characters are particularly intriguing or real and the ideas are certainly not new, even if reconstituted in a creative environment. It might hold more interest and novelty for someone not quite as jaded towards organized religion and it probably has the capacity to make some people think, I hope those people read it =)
