I heard of this book from one of Bruce Schneier's podcasts. It was in this book that I learned of the notion of tightly and loosely coupled systems. Very good read if you are designing complex systems.

I think I don't like this because I am uncomfortable with my similarities to Meursault, and I don't want to be an asshole in prison, thank you.

Reading this book made me decide that if I ever have children, they will get to have video games and play them often enough to be good at them. I loved Johnson's The Ghost Map so much that I had to read something else by him. In this book, Johnson claims that popular culture things like video games and television actually make us better or smarter at what we need to be good at in our culture (for example, using computers)and then he gives statistics and anecdotes to prove his premise. I haven't finished reading it yet, I didn't find it as fascinating as The Ghost Map, but it was still intrigueing, although you kinda get the point after reading just half of it.
I love the language in this book, and when I'm in the mood for it, I suppose I could go for more Kerouac, but this book will forever be contained within a thick crust of hype. Its turned into a bit of a cliche (like the band Nirvana). Its hard to even tell if its any good. I suppose it makes sense as a rite-of-passage book, but why not read another of Kerouac's books instead?

a pleasant story about where we come from, loosely based on the author's actual lineage. i enjoyed reading this but ultimately found the writing a little ho hum for my taste. not particularly passionate or insightful. a worthwhile read, nonetheless.
Great book! Its the last (#6) in a series but I was able to follow along with no problems. I only wish more of the story had been dedicated to Augusta and Kane.

So apparently I have a new favorite genre, Urban Fantasy. Urban Fantasies are classic stories of good vs. evil; i.e. Vampires, Werewolves, warlocks, fairies etc, but it takes place in modern civilization with normal people mixed in the charactors. I would not have pegged this as genre I would like...For me it all started with Twilight...and then Sookie Stackhouse (although I liked more then loved those) and now its The Mortal Instruments series. I just finished book one (of 3) and I really enjoyed it! I think the charactors have attitude and are fun. This first book had a couple of good unexpected twists. I like Clary and Jace and Simon and Isabelle and Alec. They make a good team and their adventures in the "glamour" of the fantasy world are fun to read about. I look forward to seeing what happens next in city of Ashes.

The best from him.
The concept of this novel is morbid and complex as 4 very different individuals meet on NYE at a place notorious in London for those wishing to commit suicide. The characters begin to take care of one another and as the evening passes, each of them have found a purpose in keeping each other alive. The story then follows each the group in the days after NYE and how they continue to be present amongst each other, despite being from various social/cultural backgrounds. But in typical Hornby style, it's fast paced and funny.

** spoiler alert ** This was a very disturbing book. Rachel Ford was kidnapped, raped, and slaughtered? for such a morbid situation the author didn't get into the other character's reactions too much. And Ruben's "Gift" was not explained at all. what was it? why did he have it? how does it even change the outcome of the story!? This was a very good book, but a little forgettable because of the lack of details.
