{Notes} • Actual rating, more around a 3.5. • This world. Holy crap. This book earned its stars almost solely on the world Melissa Marr has created. It's ominous and spooky, but just a little bit sexy as well. This lovely little town of Claysville, where no one gets sick before the age of eighty, is a little peculiar, especially when it comes to burials and funerals. Every person born within the town limits must be buried within them as well. The dead are minded by the town's Graveminder and her Undertaker, or else they rise from their graves and proceed to go around taking chunks out of people. They aren't quite ghosts, but they aren't quite zombies either. The legends and history wrapped up in this world are so intriguing. • The realm of the dead is amazing as well. Imagine every era and every kind of person colliding in one marvelous city. It makes crossing over seem not so bad, and it's the Graveminder's greatest temptation. Not to mention that Mr. D (aka, Death) is incredibly charming and rich, with just that little touch of sinister. • The roles the Graveminder and Undertaker play are so unique. The Graveminder minds the dead. Basically, she goes around to all the grave sites and keeps things pretty, while also saying a few words and pouring some spirits onto their graves. If she doesn't do this, or misses a grave, they come back and begin hurting people. The Undertaker is tasked with keeping the Graveminder safe, and to be her sole temptation to stay in the realm of the living. Obviously, this temptation makes for great romantic tension. • I seriously love this world so much, I was so disappointed when I saw it isn't going to be a series. I so, so want to visit this world again! It's practically begging to be the inspiration behind a television series! • As for the characters themselves, things could have been better, which is why this got a lower rating from me. If I just judged on the world and potential, this would be five stars. • Rebekkah (dear god, awful spelling) is a typical paranormal heroine. She's feisty and strong and oh-so-very special. She's conflicted by her feelings for Byron, since he was her step-sister's beau before she killed herself. There's a lot of guilt going on in Bek's head. I actually really liked her character in the beginning, but not so much in the middle. She immediately takes to her role as Graveminder, though, and by the end of everything, I'd returned to at least liking her okay. Byron is the typical swoony male lead. He's a little bit edgy, and he's all about Bek. I liked him alright, even if we was a little bland. What I really, really hated was how many times they had the exact same conversation: "I love you, and I know you love me!" "No I don't! But I really do..." • I actually really liked the side characters more. Amity Blue had a lot of potential. Daisha was also great, even if she was one of the Hungry Dead - I loved everything from her POV. So creepy! And even though we only meet her in the prologue, Maylene was just awesome. Any lady who keeps a fully stocked pantry of whiskey and holy water sounds like my kind of gal. ;D • The writing was very readable (I gobbled this up pretty fast), but it was a bit repetitive. I did like the mixed POVs, though I wish we'd seen more of other characters. • I honestly did not see the villain coming. That was a pleasant twist. • There are so many avenues to explore: the town council, the spiritual leaders, Alicia over in the realm of the dead! It just seems like such a waster opportunity to make this wonderful world, and only use it for one book. Here's hoping that Ms. Marr will want to revisit this place one more time. I'd definitely be along for the ride.

** spoiler alert ** 6/3/10 I am finished with it again...still love the story. I still wanted to know who the girl in the prologue is (good news is that we find out in the sequel!) I really liked reading this one a second time and catching all the little hints that the author puts in throughout the book (in song lyrics, comments, etc...) that I didn't catch the first time. A couple of "buggy" things... 1. Why would Abby order a Belgian waffle with a half English muffin on the side??? Weird...I can see fruit or something but seriously?? 2. Some of the words used in the story bothered me this time around... **Jason calling Abby his "best girl"...what teenager says that? **the way the boys keep calling Abby an amazing woman...she is 17 so maybe an amazing young lady or girl, but she is NOT a woman yet. **too many tear references..yes I get that Abby cries a lot. So do I...and can tears tickle your tongue? not sure about that one 3. Jason and Abby slide from friends to dating back to friends again a bit too easily... Still like the originality (is that a word?) of the story and LOVE the way she manages the time element. 5/17/10 I am reading this one again before I start the sequel...I wish it was on audiobook. I haven't found that yet... Original review: I have to thank Good Reads for allowing me to win this book! I originally gave the book 5 stars, but then I changed it to 4...My friend Cydnie just read it while I was out of town with her (I am sure you will see her review soon...) I tend to read a book the first time in a completely emotional way. How did it make me feel? That being said, I often miss things the first time through that I shouldn't. While I LOVED the book, there are several inconsistencies and questions that came up that my friend and I discussed that made me feel like I needed to stick with 4 stars...at least until some questions are answered and/or I read it again...So on with my review... 1. I loved the fact that Lisa Mangum can write a compelling story without the language and sex that most current authors seem to think teenagers need to have in order to enjoy a book! Can't think of one swear word... 2. If you loved the Twilight series, read this book! The fantasy element will draw you in, and Dante will keep you there. Yes Edward, you have a rival...and he is human (sort of...) 3. If you hated the Twilight series, read this book! It is nothing like Twilight at the core of the story. The main similarities are the clean writing, the love story element, and the fact that the relationship really shouldn't happen. Other than that...different story! 4. I don't want to give anything away in my review...no spoilers here, but I will say the following...Lisa Mangum has an extremely interesting view on how she explains the "fantastical" element in the story. I wasn't sure I would buy it, but she does a good job, and even incorporates a famous historical person in the explanation. There are still several questions I have about the whole thing, but I hope those questions are answered later on (yes there will be a sequel in 2010). And if not, I am able to use my imagination to fill in the blanks the way I want to. 5. The characters are well developed, especially Jason, who is Abby's friend/boyfriend she has known her whole life. You love him, even though his shortcomings make you crazy, because he is such a great person...almost too great... 6. I loved the fact that the author felt like she could change the main characters in many ways (not always for the good) and also not end the book in the traditionally "happy" ending (partly because of the sequel). That being said, it does end well...I liked the way she did it. 7. Okay...so here is the spoiler section...the time paradox has always made me a little crazy from thinking too much, and this book has an interesting way of dealing with time travel. I found I didn't want to think too much of the HOW Dante and the others get around through time, I just enjoyed the fact that they did. I definitely will read this again, as well as see if it is on CD. I read so fast through books that I am sure I missed a lot of things, but enjoyed this new author immensely. Great story!
