I did not want this book to end. I loved all the characters, especially Mr. Croup and Mr. Vandemar. They are two of the best villains I've ever read. I would love to visit London Below and just take in all the sights and smells (although I might pass on trying the food). I am sad that Neverwhere is finished and I have to move on to a new book.

Excellent book, I ploughed through the 600+ pages in three days. I love novels with dual-time narratives, especially ones like this that involve "documents" from the historical time period. All of the narratives combined to make an enthralling, authentic reading experience that I just couldn't believe wasn't real! I imagine that my fascination with polygamy and Mormonism probably added to my enjoyment of this story, but I imagine any fan of historical fiction would also love this book. 4.5*

A fun and a little bit uplifting read about what happens when we romanticize a famous/historical person and try to ape them.

Decided to give this book a rest as I'm just not as into it as I was when I first started reading it. Might come back to it eventually, but for now, I want to move on.

Seven Days in the Art World is a really informative and enjoyable read. I really like Thornton’s style of writing: detailed observation peppered with humour and very clear. The book is organised into seven sections that de-mystify different areas of the art world. As an artist I particularly enjoyed reading about the behaviour of art collectors and dealers in The Auction and The Fair. In these chapters Thornton provides a fly-on-the-wall insight into the commercial side of art that is revealing and at times shocking. I would recommend this book to all art students and emerging artists who want to know what happens outside the studio.

I thought that after a year of grad school I would never want to voluntarily read nonfiction again. But it turned out I wanted to voluntarily read nonfiction nearly immediately, because I'd had this waiting patiently on my Kindle the entire year. I was so excited about this because I've loved her other books, and the topic of this one seemed far more outwardly interesting to me. Unfortunately I didn't like it quite as much as her others. I can't tell if the problem was me -- I think I really wanted far more about modern day Hawaii and/or cultural stuff, when of course it's loads of history -- or if it was just a bit less funny than the last few. The overwhelming takeaway is how incredibly shitty American settlers were to Hawaii, methodically and shamelessly stealing sovereignty through legal reform and then just taking over. I had no idea just how blatant it was (or that Grover Cleveland tried to stop its annexation; wtg Groves?). Poor Hawaii. Ugh, white people.
