For what its worth, I would give this 3 1/2 stars if I could. The book is strange, almost something you expect to see in the waiting room of a hospice or something you would want to give to children to teach them about death in a saccharin way. But the book is actually better than that, and definitely a worthwhile read. I liked the author's short, easy-to-read style so much, I later read Tuesday's with Morrie, although I liked this book better.

Tao Lin's tone is so bored and abstractly indifferent, I couldn't really take any of his stories seriously. But that is fine with me. Bed's stories are all about 20 year olds in existential crises. Could they all be autobiographical to some degree? Probably. Like the characters in his stories and possibly like Tao himself, I read Bed with a sort of uncaring indifference; it was there, so why not read it? And for that, Tao's style and subject matter is quite alright.

Bradbury's The Martian Chronicles is, at first glance, a book of loosely connected short stories that tell of mankind's first visits and colonization of Mars. Reading through 90% of the book, this is what I thought I was reading. In typical Bradbury fashion, it was beautifully-written, funny, heartbreaking, and interesting. He deals with his usual issues like prejudice, the role of technology, and the outrageous actions that humans make. But it doesn't end there. Bradbury is unusual in that he is a science fiction writer from the first half of the twentieth century who doesn't think that science will save us all. This is a cautionary tale. But it's also a heartrending story about the pain that humans inflict on themselves for no reason. Reading the book, and hearing Bradbury's voice reminded me what I love about him. He's concerned with the here and now. He uses science fiction to tell us who we are, not to tell us what we can be. There's a place for both, but Bradbury is perfect at what he does, and I wouldn't want him to do things any other way. It's a short read, but The Martian Chronicles packs quite a punch and will stay with you after. This is the first time I've read it all the way through, but I read the first half once, years ago and every story has stuck with me since. Like the Martians and their culture, Bradbury's works have a unique longevity all their own.

The 3 main stories are annoying. Kerouac story is particularly annoying. Other material is a mixed bag. A few stories in the latter half of the book are drawn well and entertaining, but there's also some really stupid stuff in here. If you're really into the Beats this may be even more annoying than if you're not. In short, this book is mostly annoying and not recommended.

Simple, easy read, nothing important to say except it's a 'holiday travel' book. You'll easily read through this type of thing within a few days but they are enjoyable, don't need to be given much thought or time.

It's been quite awhile since I read this, but I remember being surprised by how funny it was! I guess I thought that classics weren't funny? :-)

Fascinating topic covered sloppily in a book with bad editing. Just watch the TED talk and listen to the interview with Terry Gross and skip reading the book. It's really a shame that I couldn't enjoy this book more because the use of robotics in warfare is a fascinating and important topic. I didn't realize the extent of the use of drones in the air, on land, and in the water by the military. It has shaped the execution and policy of the current wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. I was surprised to learn that there are people in a base outside Las Vegas who fly predator drone missions over Afghanistan and Iraq from a cubicle. Then they go home and have dinner with their families. I was also interested to learn that under the conventions of warfare these pilots are valid targets as they walk down the street in Las Vegas or attend their kids's soccer games. There are a lot of interesting observations like this sprinkled throughout the book -- just barely enough to keep me reading through it. The problem is that the book is so badly written -- suffering from points that are restated over and over, pointless digressions, and jokes that are either inappropriate or fall flat -- that I can't recommend it. This book should be about half it current length. This is a pity because the use of robotics -- and the eventual use of autonomous killing machines -- raises all kinds of ethical issues that should be dealt with now rather than after they are even more widely deployed. It's no longer science fiction. Update: I forgot to include this sentence from the book, which I offer as proof that it would have benefited from better editing: "Being killed by a remote-controlled machine is dispiriting."
