I gave this book two stars because two stars on here means "it's ok" and that is exactly how I feel about this book. I specialize in African American Literature, it's my passion. I have read a lot of books detailing the struggle of the 60's and the vernacular, the attitudes, everything and I'm sorry, Kathryn Stockett just does not get it right. This book would have been better just told one from point of view, Skeeters. Aiblene's voice and Minny's voice are just... wrong. Who told Stockett that Black people in the 60's said "Law have mercy"?? Please tell me so I can slap the hell out of them. Maybe "Lawd have mercy" but "Law"? And not "every" but "ever"? Leaving one letter off a word does not make it slang or correct vernacular for the times... Also, for some reason, the pain and the anger from these Black women just falls flat. I get more emotion from the White characters than I do from the maids. How is that possible? It's not an awful book but it's not worth all of this hype, in my opinion. I was expecting something with more depth, more feelings... More rage. Everything feels numbed down, to the point it's almost like reading a gossipy chick-lit book, not this powerful in-depth book about racism. I think this is one of those books where people will feel proud to say, "Why, yes, I read The Help and then I donated money to the Starving Children in Africa immediately afterwards." It's a glossed over version of the brutality of the 60's and the true hostility between White women and Black women. But, this is just my opinion, coming from a Black woman who lives in Memphis, TN, and also knows the very real feelings of racism between Blacks and Whites even today. Mississippi has not changed much from this book and that part she has nailed on the head. I just wish she would have kept the story coming from what she knows best, being a White woman. The maids' voices and tones... deserved better. Edit: I was thinking about The Help and my review and I want to rate it as a story and not as a movement. 3 stars for entertainment without the hype.
