I love fairy tale retellings, and Angela Carter writes beautiful prose. Unfortunately, I just couldn't get into the darkly bloody and sexual nature of most of these stories. There were some I liked better than others, such as Puss in Boots and The Tiger's Bride, the later of which was an interesting version of Beauty and the Beast. For the most part, though, I doubt this is a collection I would ever read for a second time.

I have read it four times in three years, and I enjoy it more each time. I would love to read it in French, but the Montcrief translation is pretty fantastic, hilariously formal and probably mildly censored through word choice. Has had a surprisingly profound effect on on my life.

I haven't read books like the Hunger Games or Lemony Snicket, books like that. I am not very in to Mysteries, for some reason I decided to read this book without knowing whats ahead. I started to read this book. I got around page 30 then I stopped reading it because I wasn't into a book about dangerous missions, secret societies and special kids. This book didn't bring me in, in the begging so that is why I didn't read more of it. I abandoned this book, I thought I could have read more but I wasn't interested. I would like to try to get out of my comfort zone with reading different Genres because I would like to make my stretch zone my comfort zone. One way I can make this happen is by reading more Mystery with different plots. I recommend this book to anyone between ages 10 and up, because anyone can read this book that like Mysteries and adventure. I would like to read many more books like this, like the Hunger Games to get out of comfort zone with reading.

It's Steve Berry - easy read, lots of action, better than the movies in many ways, like the movies in many ways.

it's a comedy and horror, but the resulting combination works a bit like a parody of both - that is, it's not particularly funny, and though it is genuinely terrifying, the lightheartedness of dave and john's friendship and goofing off mollifies it a bit. their story is pretty much what to expect if saving the world ever came down to two 20-something white boy slackers, except the problem is that i don't particularly like either of these characters and the ones that i do get ignored, disposed of, or mocked for being women (surprise, surprise - has this author ever met a woman?). all the same i have, for some reason, really enjoyed this book, so i'm torn in reviewing it. i find the mythology really interesting; i think wong's the type of writer who plans his whole story out, spends ages on the major elements and the climaxes, but then fills in the rest with i-don't-know-what-do-you-expect-from-me filler. the terror i was feeling while reading this book was genuine, and i admire any writer that can purposefully make me feel scared. at the same time though, i have to be honest, i don't think this book is particularly /good/ - it mocks anything it attempts to do seriously, if not in the moment then at least by the next chapter, and all this fucking around and unnecessary lewdness really ruined my desire to want to become engaged when the story turned serious. (if the main character doesn't take life seriously, why should i care if his is in danger?) he sets up such an elaborate universe with real terror and threats, yet doesn't answer his own questions and dangling loose ends. i was willing to ignore it in the beginning (dave doesn't seem to care about too many answers so i didn't, either) but when it stretches into major plot events getting forgotten or written off or... never mentioned again, there's only so much leniency i'm willing to give a writer. like, idk. you can tell this was written by a bored middle-aged white ex-fratboy who, while writing this book, was probably typing with one hand and masturbating with the other. (normally i'd feel weird writing something like that in a review but somehow, for this book, it fits.) eta: i've thought it over and figure this book would probably work much, much better as a series of short stories rather than a singular novel. it was a choppy and uneven - which is fair considering 90% of it is being told orally by the narrator to another character. ironically, my favorite part of the book - the ending/scenes after the climax - was also a part i think wasn't necessary, or at least didn't need as much as was written... it's weird. again, it would've worked much better as a series of related short stories. i think most of my problems with it would've dissolved with that type of format.

I enjoyed it but a little disillusioning about the family.

I have enjoyed Bill Bryson's work in the past, and really enjoy reading his sense of humour, and the unique way that he describes things. I was very disappointed with this 'autobiography' which basically left me with very little insight into Bill Bryson's life, other than his youth, at all. I would have loved to have read tales of his travels, and what made him go to certain places, or write certain books, or why he developed an eye for particular things he writes about in his books. There was nothing like this in this autobiography, and the little interludes of his mystical adventures as 'The Thunderbolt Kid' just made me think 'what a load of nonsense'. It was really off-putting. I have to say, if you're going to read this to find out more about Bill Bryson, and what makes him tick, I'd probably save yourself the effort and just look him up in Wikipedia, or some similar Internet site. Overall: This book, though readable, was a real disappointment with regards to content, and as per my rating 'it was OK', but one that I'd probably never want to re-read.

As always, brilliant. Fables is truly outstanding.

Thoughts: It always bothers me that Harry never uses his omnioculars again. They spend good money on those and then, apparently, leave them to molder. Although... perhaps this is one of those good lessons that not all of their lives are on stage for us. Plenty of action happens offstage, and whole months of Harry's life goes by that we are not privy to. Despite their obvious shortcomings, I do appreciate that one benefit of the movies is a few glimpses into downtime in the Gryffindor common room with Harry , Hermione, and Ron or in the boys' dormitory with Harry and his cohort goofing around.
