I flew through Wake by Lisa McMann when I first got the book. It was one of those books that was hard to put down because of the engaging storyline. I was hoping that I would feel the same way about Fade, the next book in the series and….drumroll… please…..I loved it just as much as the first one. This is a funny memoir by the author of the Mrs. Piggle Wiggle books written for children. Betty MacDonald has a wry sense of humor and keen powers if observation as she chronicles her days as a newlywed after WWI running a poultry farm in the Pacific Northwest. She loves to cook and describes delicious meals she concocts out of the unusual ingredients found in that region. She also describes the quirky people in that rural community. Of particular note are Ma and Pa Kettle who run a neighboring farm. Claudette Colbert and Fred MacMurry starred in the movie made and set in the 1940s. The movie was of course not as good as the book but it was the beginning of a series of B movies featuring Ma and Pa Kettle and secured their place in popular American culture as the best example of comic haphazard farming.
Good content. Indian born girl gets married off by her family to a strange man who wants to move to a strange country (USA)to live. They raise two Americanized kids but try to uphold the old country culture. Gogol, their eldest son takes a lifetime to learn to deal with the conflict of two cultures. It is a beautiful book. So is the film that just came out.

This book was a purposeful departure from my normal reading tastes. I was aiming for something light I could read in a few days, to "rinse my mouth out" after a 6 week marathon of A Prayer for Owen Meany. This book fit the bill just fine. Told from the perspectives of Emily and her husband, Sandy, this book is the story of Emily's journey after the unexpected death of her husband. "But wait!" you say, "How is her husband the narrator if he dies in the first chapter??" [And here I am not giving anything away that you can't discern from the book cover and summary blurb] Yes, her husband comes to inhabit a dog! (The title's Einstein.) The book is brainless, but painless. The husband is a cad, the mother-in-law is a bitch. Hot guy next door neighbor, intimidating new boss, flakey younger sister. They are all here. Emily herself is likable enough. She is a fairly strong woman who tackles challenges and doesn't give up on her dreams -- a nice departure from the expected "mousy" woman main character. All in all it had some cute parts, was predictable and not mentally taxing and ended cleanly. I think the author was probably going for inspirational, but she couldn't convince me there.

Shows great ways for kids to be cool down when they are angry!
For some reason this coming-of-age story draws me in almost 20 years after I first read it. There is a certain sense of isolation in Kate's story, and maybe it's those feelings of disconnect that many of us felt as teens that I see mirrored in her story.

Libertarian principles explained and expounded. Has a blind spot for tax-funded school vouchers, though (but oddly not for healthcare).

I LOVED this book. By far my favorite of the Psy-Changling series so far. I really enjoyed that there were no secrets and they just had to work through all the issues in front of them. It was so enjoyable seeing them each bend and grow a bit to allow the mate bond between them. Their emotions were right there for each other to see, and that was a welcome change from the stories with Psy main characters who struggle to deal with emotion. The secondary story lines were enjoyable, too, but a definite second to the primary story. By that I mean that Riley and Mercy's story was strong enough not to be overtaken by all the other things going on in the book. It was a good balance. The series-arc storylines going on were good, too. I think I'm going to take a Psy-Changeling break and read something else next. I just want to savor Riley & Mercy for a while.
