As a huge fan of July's film "Me and You and Everyone We Know," I was really really REALLY excited to pick up this book. Happily, I wasn't disappointed. The stories here are funny, smart and often unsettling. I think it takes guts to write, without overbearing judgement, about a "special needs" teacher who hooks up with her underage student. Some of the stories here are super-brief, others take more time to unfold the action. All are written in July's clear, frank, sometimes uncomfortably honest voice. The only real quibble is that the narrators' voices tend to, after awhile, sound the same and it's occasionally difficult to separate one protagonist from another. That aside, I loved this collection and I'm ready for more of Miranda July's writings.

Read as daughter was reading them at the same time so we could discuss anything that cropped up. I actually really enjoyed them.
My first introduction to Peter Ho Davies! The first story, "The Hull Case," is still one of my favorites of his, period.

I fell into a three-year relationship with this book. My new boyfriend loaned it to me to read over winter break in 2004, and I finished it in two days... then read it again later in the spring. Chabon's writing is so lovely and so true... you can't help but hang on his every word and invest yourself into the text. I still have the loaned copy... I suppose I should get to returning it soon.

This book was so hard to get through. Not because it wasn't written well, but because it was SO brutal, depressing, and harsh. I read it once. Don't think I'll read it again. But I'm glad I read it--it's something that I think most people should get through, if they can.

Captured the feel of that time for me. I wonder if I'd have liked it then?
Way too many flashbacks in this one for my taste. Still good, but I wish we could move past the angst now.
