Great tone, caught between dreamy and humorous.

Death is a stain that is worn through life and it is only through death that it can be removed. Brilliant!

I can't possible say enough about these authors, and if you know me well enough, you'll know why. They are fantastic and can weave a story with everything I love in a novel. And yes, I cried at the end.

This was such a cute read. I loved it. Only complaint is it's way too short. I'll be looking at other books by this author.

** spoiler alert ** Contains personal judgment. This is the sequel to Twilight, and I honestly didn't like it just because Edward Cullen was not there. You see, I'm a big fan of Edward, and I just don't like Jacob Black. Nonetheless, I have to continue reading and finish this book because I know that somewhere within the book, Edward will come back. This ended up making you want for more of it, because you want more of Edward! He just didn't get the spotlight on this book.
My initial reaction to this book was colored by the fact that I had just finished Heidi, making the action-scene-open of Graceling more than a little startling by comparison. I was worried at first that I had on my hands another Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, which I never finished because the endless obsession of the author with ninjas was beyond tiresome. Luckily I kept reading! Because once Katsa's Grace -- and why she used it -- was explained, I was enraptured, and when the Council and Po and Raffin entered I was sold. Then, of course, I fell in love with Bitterblue, much like Katsa did, and mentally moved her up in my mental ranking of imaginary characters to... this is a bold statement, but, to Katniss levels of awesome as an Action Girl heroine. Moving, emotional, and with human flawed characters who are flexible enough that they can stop being wrong-headed before you, the reader, start getting exasperated with them. Good ending, on an ambiguous-but-happy note fitting this fairy-tale-with-an-edge.

Growing up in an overwhelmingly white, protestant suburb of Pittsburgh, I didn't even talk to a Jewish person until I was in college. All of my notions of Jews up to that point (with apologies to Harry Chauss) were gleaned from this book. I have since been re-educated, although I must admit I still have an aversion to liver that goes beyond the taste and texture. By the way, this book is screamingly funny.

A good adult fairy tale. Heralded as an instant classic of fantasy literature, Maguire has written a wonderfully imaginative retelling of The Wizard of Oz told from the Wicked Witch's point of view. More than just a fairy tale for adults, Wicked is a meditation on the nature of good and evil. Elphaba is born with green skin, a precocious mind, and a talent for magic.
