I've been wanting to read this trilogy for a long time. Everest has always fascinated me. I like to read these shorter, easier books sometimes so I can recommend them to the kids I teach at school. I will definitely recommend these to upper elementary and middle school students.

Not a lot of pretty pictures--but you're going to see them with your own eyes! Great, comprehensive and practical information.

I liked this book because it does a nice job of explaining the different types of poems and offering ideas on how to teach them to kids. It also has plenty of examples, which are great. I think the key to teaching any kind of poetry is to not half-ass it. Spend time really getting the kids to understand it rather than just rushing through it, and this book is perfect for creating three or four day poetry units. My only frustration was that the handouts/graphic organizers often took up more than one page. I have a limited number of copies available to me so I didn't like that some of the lessons called for 4-page handouts. The graphic organizers should have been laid out more efficiently.

I loved this book. Very assessable (sp?) and great for anyone to "understand" the experience of an addict. Funny, too.

** spoiler alert ** The concept of this book is about eternal battle of good vs evil. Whoever won would've ruled over the Earth, and the opposite would be banished for all of eternity. The most cunning 'daemon' was chosen on the side of evil, and the most valiant 'irin' was chosen on the side of good. Each of the irin and the daemon were allowed seven minions to help them on their conquests of the earth. Irin's minions were called 'virtus' and daemon's were called 'pecatti'. For every virtu there is an equal and opposite daemon minion. Lily is actually a virtue, a castimonia, means chastity. While Lux is a pecatti, which stand for luxuria, a complete opposite of her.. However, when Lux is given a task to take Lily to his master, he unexpectedly betrayed his master because he fell in love with Lily. He risked everything in his life; battle goblins, demon dogs, giant fish, sea dragons, and other magical creatures in order to save Lily, the one he couldn't imagined existing without. Honestly, this book was below my expectation. The story has a slow pace at the beginning and kinda rushed at the end, so I just felt the ending was still lacking. I thought it's better if there's more depth in character development. But I loved the author's creativity and imagination, her retelling of good and evil was really interesting. I still enjoyed it :)

It feels strange to give an explanation of why I love this book so much. I gave one of the stories, "Testimony of Pilot" to a group of kids I was teaching last winter, and I am afraid to say not a one of them found it the least bit interesting. In fact, they were mightily confused by it. We had been reading an O'Henry Prize collection, and I think they had gotten used to a very structured, rigorous kind of short story; the Hannah didn't really do if for them. But the reason I like Airships so much, I think, has something to do with the fact that these stories aren't at all what you're supposed to expect from "classic" short fiction. They're messy, they have ridiculous, over-the-top turns of phrase, and they often don't coalesce into any sort of moral or tidy meaning. Which is precisely why this book is one of the best examples of how the short story is a far more flexible medium than most people give it credit for. And why I'll teach this book to any short fiction class I ever have, even if they hate it.

The Tim Drum by Gunter Grass was the novel that released post-WWII German literature from oblivion. Combining 1950s thoroughly modern absurdism with some very inventive magical realism, this fictional memoir of Oskar Matzerath from Danzig allowed Nazi horrors and catastrophe to play a part, to be the setting, but not to determine the entire novel. It struck me that if Kafka had written Slaughterhouse Five, it might have read somewhat like this book.
