I thought this book was just OK, despite the rave reviews of many. I actually liked Mermaid Chair (by the same author) better.

picked up this book at a Border’s liquidation sale. I have seen it on various bookshelves and DVD racks for a couple of years now and thought that I should take a stab at it. I usually don’t like fictional humor or chick lit, but I know I need to try new things. I have to say that though it wasn’t my kind of book, I wasn’t disappointed and I did enjoy reading it. Denis Cooverman isn’t exactly a nerd, but he is far from being part of the popular crowd. During his graduation speech, he decides to tell members of the student body how he actually feels about them. The crowd is aghast when he calls out one of his classmates as being a snob and tells everyone that his best friend is gay. Yet the greatest shocker is when he declares his love for the popular Beth Cooper. When he finally speaks to her after the ceremony, he asks her to come to his house that night for a party. Of course, Denis has never thrown a party before and when Beth and her two friends arrive it is only Denis and his supposedly gay best friend in attendance. Yet that doesn’t stop the drama from blasting through his front door in the form of Beth’s military boyfriend. As Beth’s BF chases the whole gang around town, Beth and Denis begin to form a bond that could be just what Denis was looking for. My favorite part of the novel were the illustrations that opened each chapter showing Denis and his downward spiral throughout the night. There were definitely times when I chuckled at the circumstances that the group found themselves in. I thought that the antics between Denis and his best friend were really cute. Most of all, I enjoyed the ending because I thought it was tender but real. Overall, I wasn’t that impressed but I did have a good time which was worth the $8. www.iamliteraryaddicted.blogspot.com

I was disappointed by this book. It seemed very promising, the characters were intriguing, the premise was intriguing (in the 30s, a young girl who has contravened her family and societal mores is put into an insane asylum and kept there for 60 years until the asylum closes and the grandaughter discovers her existence for the first time) but the execution was too sketchy. The novelist had an interesting idea but didn't develop it. There just wasn't enough meat on the bones. Particularly towards the end I got the feeling that the author was rushing through to complete the novella and had lost interest.

This was not good. I have a real soft spot for the movie and liked it so much better. Reese Witherspoon gave Elle a certain depth that the book-character lacks. Additionally, the other characters are painfully simple and exaggerated. Just not what I was hoping for.
I loved this book! Loved the characters and the writing! I had a hard time putting it down!

I read it for the first time when I was 16, as a compulsory read in order to pass an English Proficiency exam. I hated it because it was long, hard to read (you couldn´t get any more Scottish than that and understanding the lingo is hard for some English native speakers, let alone for a 16-year old who could barely make sense of texts in English) and because it dealt with situations to which there was no way I could relate... Yet there was something alluring about it, something that compelled me to keep it on my shelf through the years instead of binning it or selling it to a second-hand bookshop. I finally got around to re-read it two years ago, when I was 22, more wordly (even if slightly more so) and definitely more "proficient". I thought it was superb! It ticks all the boxes: wit, suspense, childhood memories, drunken shenanigans, random sex, surreal situations (like the granny blowing up at the time of cremation because they forgot to get rid of the flammable pacemaker!), non-cheesy romance, hilarious characters... Good good good :)
Couldn't decide on 3 1/2 or 4 stars. Gripping read, but seriously depressing. But what about slavery isn't?

Fluid descriptive passages and witty dialogue ensure that Fallen Angels is a clever, addictive read. Simon’s misunderstood pop-culture references make for some particularly amusing scenes. However, the middle of the book is slow, perhaps as a result of the main villain’s anonymity and physical absence. The plot is also patchy in places, but I like how this present-day series is beginning to connect with the Victorian-era Infernal Devices books. Cassandra Clare has a way of sneaking her characters' banter and distinct idiosyncrasies into readers’ hearts, so regardless of the book’s pacing, I was hooked. Clary is a strong and resourceful protagonist in the first three books; by her own admission, she seems less driven in Fallen Angels, as her focus is mainly on her relationship. The result is some great passionate moments with Jace – yay! – but also a fair bit of pining while they’re apart. Still tormented by his inner demons, Jace also lacks some of his usual bravado, and his actions add some (perhaps unnecessary) angst to their relationship. Simon is a true hero in this book. He undergoes more personal struggles than the entire cast combined, and still maintains his endearing nerdy-ness. Perhaps my single "issue" with Simon is that he’s so unerringly good that even in his most conflicted moments there’s no real sense of (moral) uncertainty. This makes him an admirable and sympathetic character, but not quite as interesting as one might hope. That said, City of Fallen Angels is a worthy sequel, not as fast-paced as the original trilogy, but just as compulsively readable and full of so-real-they-jump-off-the-page characters.
