I thought this was good airplane reading. Not particularly well written but kind of interesting and entertaining.

Somehow I think this will read better in Spanish.

I adored Loving Frank by Nancy Horan so I thought I would enjoy The Paris Wife too. Lo and behold, I did. I honestly didn't know much about Ernest and the others of The Lost Generation and this book opened the door to a whole world for me. Wikipedia was thoroughly combed after I finished this book.

I read this book on the recommendation of a good friend who is perhaps even a more voracious reader than I am (and she has two kids to look after!) If you've seen and liked the movie Simon Birch, or even if you didn't like the movie, it was but a dull shadow of this book that it was based on. This book has many more layers of meaning and is much more funny, touching, poignant, etc... John Irving is an amazing author. If you haven't been introduced to him yet, I think you should read A Prayer for Owen Meany or even The Cider House Rules immediately.

The first time I read this book I was thirteen years old. All I remembered about it was that it was about a Chinese farmer and I liked it. This second time through I could see how so much went past me when I read it as a youth with no life experience. Now, as a grown-up, I was able to appreciate the depth of the characters' feelings and the storytelling gifts of Pearl Buck. The book was first published in 1931, but it's written in what could almost be termed a classical style. The great beauty of the tale as a whole is in Wang Lung's unwavering connection with his land---the "good earth." I love the meaning of the name Lung, which signifies "one whose wealth is from the earth." It's so much more lyrical and representative than "farmer."

Finished it last week. This author can really tell a story.Had me enthralled from the off and keeps the reader guessing with some great twists.
May have to get this one for my bookshelf. Fun point of reference when taking literature based in 19th century England.
well not my usual reading but intriguing. The book covers the classical composers of the 20th century and attempts to explain what influences their work. I was most interested in the cultural and geopolitical influences on art...especially WWII impacts. Also was fun to just think about "composing as a career" and what that world must be like. Alex Ross is a great writer.
