One poem in this collection, in which Forche sits down with a murderous Salvadoran colonel ("The Colonel"), is brutal beyond words. And yet Forche does a phenomenal job finding words anyhow. This speaks to my fascination with representation: how can/does a poet (or ethnographer or journalist) enact an identity with which to represent the actions and suffering--the lives--of others?

After World War II, Julia Child lived with her husband Paul in Paris and Marseilles, where they worked for the U.S. government (pre-CIA type work) and she found herself attending Le Cordon Bleu and becoming a chef who could teach others how to master French cooking. I was really into this book for 200 pages or so and then the going go tedious. It is saved by Julia's humorous outlook on life, and her wonderful descriptions of people, food, and French culture. Much of the book was constructed from letters that she kept 50 years, and the entire story is illustrated by photography by her husband from their years in France. Edited after re-reading - Julia is so inspiring. She recreated herself at age 37 and didn't start her tv career until her late 40s. She encourages you to try, who cares if you fail. :) This is great to read along with Julie & Julia by Julie Powell, or while trying recipes from Mastering the Art of French Cooking.

Written in '94 I believe, does feel a bit dated, but still entirely relevant. The really exciting part was the last section of four, which deals with actual initiatives one can take on the local level, rather than the same old bad-old-Bretton-Woods-institutions lecture, which the book has quite the redundantly excessive share of. Would even go almost as far as to suggest ripping that last section out and tossing the rest (into the compost pile, of course).

A great deal smuttier than the children's fiction. Although I'm now imagining adult reworkings of the Big Friendly Giant, Fantastic Mr Fox, The Magic Finger and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

This is the second book in the Legends of Shannara duology which is another of the prequel series that takes place before the original Shannara trilogy. I read this latest book after just finishing "Bearers of the Black Staff" the first book in this short series. I quite enjoyed the first book which in many ways was standard Fantasy fare but written capably. Brooks is very good at creating solid characters that you care about and want to find out what happens next. "The Measure of the Magic" does add quite a lot of escalation to the first novel. The first book ends with a very serious situation of an invasion coming into the valley that had been protected for 500 years. A new danger enters onto the scene that is much more serious and a greater threat to the new holder of the Black Staff and his friend and companion. This really adds to the story and makes it something more than just the end of the duo logy wrapping up previous plot points. I really liked the character development and the sacrifices some of the characters made and the book is more bitter-sweet than the other novels in the series. Other plot elements and new characters round up the story. Considering the young age of the main characters this novel though does feel more like a transitional novel than the end of the duology. The characters were certainly strong enough for a continuation of the story and I certainly liked it enough to have wanted this to be more than a duology, but there always has to be a cutting of point when working with young heroes such as the Harry Potter series. If you like Terry Brooks style I am confident you will enjoy this addition. I had forgotten how much I liked his writings and need to go back and read the other series again involving the Shannara world.
I'm obsessed with the Harry Potter series. This book completely reignited my imagination, my love for fantasy and my love for reading in general. It's a brilliant story that everyone can relate to. J.K Rowling is my hero.

A detailed and sometimes tedious look at the interplay between political theology and political philosophy over the last 300 years. Unfortunately, the author chose to leave off his tale around World War II, leaving me quite unsatisfied given the recent clashes in the "culture war".
