I have only read 2 prior books by Harper Fox but she has a way of writing that immerses you in that place & time. The Salisbury Key is no exception to this. After a somewhat sluggish start, I was thoroughly engrossed in the story of Daniel, the mystery surrounding his former lover's death & his growing attraction to Rayne. The reason this is not a 5 star for me is I had a couple little quibbles with the story. Daniel's emotions are all over the place. He's grieving, angry, depressed & confused about what his relationship with Jason was all about. This is not a place you can be in and be ready to fall in love with someone else. Yet this is exactly what we're supposed to believe. The timing and circumstances just made me very skeptical about this relationship. My second issue was that S. Rayne seemed to have a very lackadaisical attitude about his sexual preferences. It seems he either never thought about it before or maybe he was closeted due to being in the military (but then he says, I'm not gay in one of the scenes in the book). Either way, even though this is the first man he's attracted to, he accepts this with unbelievable nonchalance. These two issues aside, I do still highly recommend this book. It is a well written, original story that has a little mystery, romance & adventure.

*Spoiler Free* This novel was so creepy! Seriously. Victoria Scwab's writing was hauntingly beautiful and the descriptions of the town of Near were crystal clear in my head. The actual plot was unlike anything I have ever read before. The world was set in a fairy tale time, sort of medieval but not. It felt so magical, other-worldly almost that it's difficult to find an analogy to explain it. But believe me when I tell you this; it was special. Near was beautifully described and if could go there I would...(except for the whole kidnapping aspect). Lexi was an awesome protagonist and she never would admit defeat. She was exactly the type of heroine I love: strong, kick-ass and a bit too stubborn. She never took 'no' for an answer and I felt her frustrations at being singled out because she was a girl. I also really liked how Victoria Schwab weaved in Lexi's memories particularly those to do with her father. They really added to the amazing story-telling. The minor characters in this book were great too. I loved Magda and Dreska, I admit I was a bit scared of them but they definitely grew on me. One character I adored was Lexi's mother. Her quiet disposition made it appear she was a weak character but she was anything but. And the fact that she was so quiet, but still determined, made me like her even more. THE VERDICT 4 stars - An amazing chilling debut by Victoria Schwab. For more of my reviews and other bookish goodness go to: http://bookchowdown.blogspot.com/
