Attempts to answer the important question: "How can so many people who live in the same place see the world so differently?" Belongs on the shelf with The Republican Brain and The Filter Bubble. Manjoo's argument identifies four factors that have contributed to the proliferation of competing realities: 1) Selective Exposure - consuming information that confirms your presuppositions and avoiding information that complicates them 2) Selective Perception - interpreting documentary proof according your your pre-existing beliefs 3) Peripheral Processing - whereby we select "experts" that affirm us and eschew those that do not - regardless of their qualifications 4) The Hostile Media Phenomenon, whereby we interpret objective information as biased against us just because it doesn't parrot our conclusions. Finally, Manjoo discusses the stealth campaigns waged by firms like DCI Group and RJR Tobacco's GGOOB group. These groups find ways to push corporate and political agendas by identifying the corporate or political interest and pushing those interests in a package completely dissociated from the company or political party. In this way, those campaigns or Video News Recordings appear unbiased and objective and hence - safe. But in reality, they are extraordinarily artful propaganda. An example might be how DCI published the online magazine Tech Central Station and appeared to run independent news and analysis. But is wasn't independent: it was published by the PR firm DCI Group, whose clients included McDonalds and Exxon Mobile. So when Eric Schlossenger published Chew On This a school version of Fast Food Nation and threated McDonald's business model - attract kids and their parents - Tech Central Station began a smear campaign against Schlossenger. It was journo-lobbying. McDonald's name was never anywhere near the TCS articles, but its interests were being served. Groups like DCI launder ideas, so corporate and political agendas can be advanced under the guise of objectivity. It's a valuable and instructive book by virtue of its diagnosis. Unfortunately there is no cure prescribed other than the author's final words: "Choosing means trusting some people and distrusting the rest. Choose wisely."

Worth reading. I couldn't help thinking that the doctor was a coward. Cowardly to not try to look past ugliness and befriend his creation. He had opportunity to try to get Justine released from her death penalty and didn't even try. He had opportunities to fight his creation and either fainted or failed to act. He couldn't even confess to his family or to the law what he had done. I loved the theme of accepting without letting outward appearances dictate our treatment of others.

I somehow grew up without ever reading Hemingway, so decided it was time to read some. The audio books narrated by Alexander Adams (stage name for Grover Gardner) fit Hemingway's style perfectly. This book is a classic about the Spanish civil war.

If possible, this one is even WORSE than the others. Our intrepid Ms. Meyer - oops! Mrs. Cullen! - gets her wish and finds out that she has the best. power. ever. Also, she thinks "Renesmee" is the most beautiful name ever. It boggles the mind. TWO trays of margaritas were necessary to make it through this one.

oh my gosh i loved this book sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo so so much a.k.a. A LOT!!!! It was so good with a sort of evil tone and it was really fast paced. I would recommend this to ANY FIFTH GRADE GIRL who needs a new, really good, series. I have the 2nd book on hold and can't wait to read it! I didn't get how all the girls were so nice to Claire and then they would just start hating her again. I really don't like Alicia, she seems so mean and critical. And the same thing with Massie. Read this and you won't regret it!!!

Full of fascinating information, like the fact that men survive more plane crashes because they are stronger than women and children and can push them aside.

Unfortunately I have been unable to get my hands on a copy of the rest of this series, so have only read the first book. However, I thoroughly enjoyed it. In this book I definitely liked the fact that the main character was male, these brothers brought a kind of bond to the story that just has to make you smile.

Really depressing. A little too metaphorical and symbolic for me - something you'd read in English class. Eloquent writing though.

This was a great read for our book club. Easy, fun read. Was able to get into the story, didn't want to put it down until it was finished :)
