Never could get into it. Looked like it had some interesting "creative exercises", though.

An apt student can get what they need in the first part of this book and move on. The rest is pretty redundant, but useful if you feel like you need things listed out explicitly.

I've never been a fan of advanced math or physics. I never even took Calculus in high school. So I feel that this book was pitched to me... someone curious, but who doesn't have the patience to plow through the full version of Brief History of Time. Yes... it did deliver on that goal. Just long enough to help me understand the major aspects of physics (relativity, quantum physics, the uncertainty principal, etc.) the four major forces (gravity, electromagnetism, weak and strong nuclear interaction) and how all that relates; but no so long as to make me bail out early. I started losing interest in the last chapters... advanced string theories... worm holes... and mercifully that's about where the book ended as well. I enjoyed the brief vignettes of physics heroes (at the end) enough to see if I can find a decent, objective biography on Sir Isaac Newton. I never knew he was such a dick. Also surprising to me was the repeated religious overtones. I was uncertain if that was some faith of Hawking leaking in, or a bow to religious forces simply to sidestep controversy.

Never read this book while hungry. The descriptions of the chocolates were mouthwatering. I think I enjoyed Five Quarters of the Orange more than this book; the plot was more complex in that one. Yet, I still enjoyed this book a lot.

A gorgeous edition of some of Newman's finest preaching. A classic example of Christian moral and biblical preaching by one of the finest minds of the 19th Century.

Really interesting. Throughout the first half I wasn't sure if I liked it because of various inconsistencies but it turned out that they just added to the brilliance of the book. I really recommend it.

OK, I admit, I wanted to quit somewhere around page 489. But the last 100 pages make the first 700 worth it, more or less. Lots of good history, but I find that I am just not interested right now. Might have been better to have saved this one to read when the kids were a little older and my eyes weren't already crossing by 8pm. Overall, I'm glad I read it, but I'm also glad it's over. :)
