I'm a dog lover/owner (a naughty yellow lab to boot), so there was a good amount I could relate to in this book. It didn't blow me away the way I had anticipated (everyone talked it up so much), but overall it was a very sweet message about the role our beloved pets play in our lives. I read it a month after putting my cat down, so that was an additional emotional connection that I made. Not ground breaking literature, but a sweet, quick read.
A fascinating autobiography of Hickman who grew up on the Hollywood studio sound stages of the 1930s & 1940s. The secong half of the book is Hickman's exploration of the acting process through research and experience. The best book I have ever read about the process and techniques of acting.

I figured out the twist about half-way through, but I love these characters.
David Lodge remains the preeminent representative of the satirical wing of the "campus novel" (along with Malcolm Bradbury, Howard Jacobson and Kingsley Amis, who in a sense laid down the template with Lucky Jim but got out early). Though the genre term sounds a bit limiting, Lodge has derived a large body of hilariously funny, sociologically insightful writing out of a quite contained set of materials. It seems mostly no one troubles to write compellingly about the pains and indignities of aging until they reach that point in their own life. Lodge (now 74) adds a moving portrayal of his own increasing deafness (not just a by-product of age, as it has been worsening since his late 40s), so this book is more "serious" than some of his prior work. Emulating Shakespeare's magic wood, where the physical displacement of the characters from their daily lives allows unexpected and transformative things to happen, Lodge has often used traveling to academic conferences to similar ends. In keeping with the sometimes sombre tone of this book, the central character makes a visit to Auschwitz while on a lecture tour of Poland. This proves (as you might expect) an almost inassimilable experience but does to some extent put his own problems "in perspective".

I have no clue why some people thought this was suggestive. Well, for children and adults have an emotinal and maturity level of an 11 year old or older will love this book. I had to read this for a class and dd not enjoy it but then I loved it! I ended up finishing it up pretty quickly! It had an amazing plotline and made me feel blessed and bad for the main characters in the end. I want to say so much more but it would spoil it!

I read this at a friend's recommendation. I liked it and it's set in Lafayette, so there's definitely a connection. It's always good to realize that someone else's childhood was more screwed up than mine, although we have alcoholic parents in common and I could relate to many of her experiences, I don't think I would be friends with the author. Maybe it's just too tragic.

I'm about 1/3 through this book and enjoying it a lot. The narration shifts between an older concierge of a high-class apartment building in Paris who wonders what the purpose of her life is and a young resident determined to commit suicide. Their observations on life offer much food for thought. I'm not done yet, but I'd recommend this book

I'd heard it was good so even though it's got some unusual things going on, I stuck with it. Was angry for a week when I finished it. Still am now that I think about it.
I have re-read this book countless times, in addition to the other books in the series. It is a fantastic contemporary introduction to sci-fi for readers of all ages and skill. I hope they make an amazing movie out of it!

在大多数情况下,我拒绝将非常小的孩子们的书籍列入清单。 但这真可爱又动人,我无能为力。
