I have recommended this book to others...in order to see if they hate it as much as I did. This book reminded me of "Wuthering Heights", which I also disliked. I found the characters in "Here on Earth" to be completely unlikeable and in the end, my main reason for finishing the book was because I was desperately hoping for the characters to die.

The spouse swapping scene is unexpectedly poignant.

This book is about so many different things, but mostly it is about life. It is the story of one girl's journey that is very entertaining to read and leaves you with a hopeful, optimistic outlook on life in general (without being cheesy). Charlotte has always been in the gifted and talented programs at school. She excels at reading and writing... but she is diagnosed with a learning disability when it comes to numbers. When Charlotte switches to Shady Groves school, she is unable to enter her normal gifted programs because of it. Now she has to brave her scary - shady - school, ridiculously easy classes, and living with the weight of the impossible expectations from her father. Charlotte's education and learning disability may frame the novel, but this isn't just a book about school. Actually, it really isn't about school at all. It is about learning, yes, but learning from life experiences. When Charlotte gets involved with Amanda (A.K.A Girl Wonder), she will fight with everything she has to stay on the "inside". She's hanging out with the "right" group, the untouchably rich and popular.... but maybe the "right" group is more wrong. Charlotte finds herself experimenting with drugs, sex and debate team? She's kind of confused about it too. Bottom line, this story is a wonderful ride that you don't want to miss. I was not expecting this book to be so touching, endearing, sad and funny. It had so many different levels of depth that I would have ever pegged it for. It deals with tough issues such as family drama, first love, drugs, parental pressure, failure, learning disabilities and much more. This novel is just really filled with life. The worlds are so full of life that the story is consuming. From someone who loves science fiction and fantasy, a finding a great contemporary is a big deal. I would recommend this novel without a second thought. Read it.

I don't like cookie-cutter stories, especially when it comes to fantasy. That goes for happy endings as well as dark ones. The main issue I take with this series is that after 1600+ pages, we're left with...nothing. No character development, no sense that anything major has occurred (and there are several wars fought over the course of the books). The fear of this started to creep up on me in the second book, in the Seinfeld-ian Quest for Nothing led by Bayaz and his crew. The third book seemed like it would be building to a crescendo - that the faith you put into the story for the prior 1000 pages would somehow pay off. Great evil would finally rear its ugly head. Plots would be uncovered. Vengeance would be gained. The world would change, at least in some small way. (view spoiler) It's strange, because Abercrombie is obviously a very capable author, and to his credit he kept me turning pages all the way to the end. But there were passages that I had to struggle through, convinced that everything was building to something grand, that a great payoff was just around the corner. Instead, I was left with the feeling that all of this could have been much better said and done in a stand-alone book rather than a three part epic. And (not really a spoiler) the ending is just a series of thinly-veiled "this isn't over yet!" moments, where no characters gain closure, but hints at future plot threads are revealed. I'm not asking for sunshine and lollipops, but I do want to feel that my journey over these three books meant something, led to something, made me feel something other than... ennui?

I expected it to be a fluffy book, but I really enjoyed it. I thought the characters were believable. Much of it was funny and made me laugh out loud. I'm not in favor of a wife having a male best friend other than her husband, but in this book the relationship is clean and innocent - and Becky is fully in love with her husband. Descriptions of LDS/Mormon life and motherhood were enjoyable, and I laughed and cried throughout.

This book had several interconnected webs as we first find lawyer Ed Eagle being hired by a golf pro who is being accused of murder. Then in another plot line, Ed's ex-wife manages to escape from prison in Mexico and she comes gunning for him. Throw in a third plot line with former CIA spy Teddy Fay arriving in Sante Fe and you need a program to keep track of the players. I found myself wondering why they are all in the same book. This is definitely a "junk food" read.

Within this book, many problems that our society faces are discussed through short stories, from different viewpoints. Issues such as women working and the effects it has on children and the home, the loss of identity for the Native Hawaiians, the reality of the poor not being able to make it on minimum wage, and many other topics that deal with gender, race, illnesses such as depression and aids etc. are mentioned. I truly recommend it. It will cause you to look at life a bit differently. For the contents go here: http://web.grinnell.edu/sociology/fac...

Got this much used for $2.00. One of the few times I have actually bargained. There was no price and the clerk suggested $4.00.
