This booked dragged and didn't have much to say in the end. Seemed to be the author trying to say something nice (in a novel format) about her evil mother (real life), but it doesn't end up saying much at all. Couldn't stop in the middle, but felt like it!

This books does a lot. It introduces us to Dr. Watson and to the Holmes/Watson developing relationship---their first meeting is wonderful reading. There are the murders...Holmes takes the uninitiated Dr. Watson along and shows the amazed and impressed doctor step by step how he identifies the murderer by "the power of reasoning backwards." And then there is the narrative itself. Here I was less impressed. At least half of the story takes place in the American West and among the Mormons. Like Doyle's contemporary audience probably did, I found this change of setting interesting and unexpected, but unfortunately the part set "Out West" rang less true and seemed flatter to me than the parts set in London. On the whole, however, this was an enjoyable introduction to Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson in novel form.

You can definitely tell Ms Harris is ending this series. I absolutely love the Sookie books but agree with a lot of other reviews in that Ms Harris now seems to be just going through the motions in churning out another book. The book wasn't bad as such. Just kinda moved along without really much happening. There was no 'omg what's going to happen!' moments. Still, I will be sad when the series ends next May. : (
The big buzz of Summer 2009 for a debut short story collection. I was pleasantly surprised by those stories. While not in love with all of them, there's no denying that Tower is an industrious craftsman, that one of his greatest strength is a profound knowledge of mechanics, and that he has a gift for the freshest imagery and metaphor I've come across in quite a while. Anyone who cares deeply about the short story form has much to learn and savor from this collection.

Diamond Age is a book with big ideas. The future, even twenty years after the book was written, is presented so clearly and so convincingly that it seems pre-ordained. The world-building is staggeringly constructed, and it's complemented by enough philosophy and musings to please the most introspective of readers. Many of the characters are interesting, and the way the story evolves is fascinating to watch. There are stories within stories within stories, and the fairy-tale elements particularily stand out. The story lacks an antagonist, however. In terms of bad-asses villians, it's nearly impossible to top Raven, of course. But without a clear enemy, the narractive feels unfocused much of the time. Stephenson's narration is furthermore all over the place--some scenes are described in the greatest detail, while others sum up the events of years with scaractly a mention. Some very prominent characters fall from the narrative entirely. The end, as others have mentioned, seems to have been inspired by Monty Python's The Holy Grail. The main POV, Nell, is easy to empathize with as a child, but she grows a decade older very quickly and is a different character. It's also difficult to overlook some of her Mary Sue attributes as well. Stephenson is a good writer, and it's puzzling to me that he or his editors didn't feel like this was a problem. Maybe there is a meta-structure to the story that escaped me. The flaws of plot and character are many and significant, but to me the setting and complex story-telling redeems it. This book is a classic of the genre and it ages surprisingly well.
