The cover of my copy of Stranger in a Strange Land claims it is "The Most Famous Science Fiction Novel of All Time." I weep for the genre. Let me start by saying I'm a Sci-Fi fan. I'm even a Robert Heinlein fan, having enjoyed The Moon is a Harsh Mistress and Starship Troopers. I'm even pre-disposed to like Heinlein's libertarian-ish political viewpoint. But I have to say, this book was a steaming pile of crap (academically speaking). As someone who had no previous knowledge of the subject, let's just say that I did not expect the second half of the book to be a rather earnest defense of a pantheistic, polygamous, cannibalistic sex cult. I don't think you ever really start a book expecting to encounter a pantheistic, polygamous, cannibalistic sex cult. But there it is--begun and spread by the main protagonists. At two points, sympathetic characters raise semi-serious objections to the cult. Nevertheless, within several pages they dive right in (sans clothing). EVEN WORSE than a positive portrayal of a freakish cult, is that the book was boring. I know, it hardly seems possible with the subject matter, but vast swaths of the book are wasted on entirely meaningless social banter. I assume the legion of fans of this book think it says some profound things about religion, alien cultures, social mores, and the limits of human knowledge. The fans are wrong.

The Road is a harrowing tale of a father and son on an all-but-solitary trek through a post-apocalyptic wasteland. While the set-up has been mined many a time by other writers (and filmmakers), never has the apocalypse been more emotionally stirring. In a world almost completely devoid of life, McCarthy somehow finds room for a faint sliver of hope in the love between father and son, and the ever-so-slight chance of finding the "good guys". The "good guys" may always be outnumbered and well-scattered, but when they meet up, despair is forced back another notch or two.

I liked the book, but really thought the whole marriage thing was weird. This woman must have had a bad experience or had really bad examples of marriage around her, because i really disagree with her opinions.

Amazing. Simply Amazing. Even better than the first one, and I thought that would be difficult to achieve. EVERYONE, not just fantasy-lovers, EVERYONE should read this series. I can't wait for the third one to be published. When? Please?

the world is a crazy place.
This is a cute fable about how the first cat came to be domesticated. Recommended for all cat lovers and would be a good story to share with children.
I liked it, but it moved slowly at first--I liked the American Dream aspect . . . rags to riches, hard work, thrift, etc.

As usual, Salvatore doesn't disappoint... and, as usual of late, he doesn't fail to break my heart a little, either.

I like dragons, so I like it for that. It was a nice, pleasant fantasy.

THE FAMILY TREE, the debut novel of Carole Cadwalladr, follows the struggles of three generations of a family, giving view to how the problems of the mother leave indelible scars on her children. For the most part, it is an engrossing read, one of those "I can't put this down yet" books, that don't necessarily change your life, but help make a week move faster. It is beautifully written and heartfelt. The major difficulty in the book is the form that Cadwalladr tries to employ. Because she is tracing the paths of three different women, the action of the story jumps around a good deal from the present day to various moments in the past. This made the main story line--that of Rebecca's current struggles in her marriage--harder to follow. But as the story progresses and the lives of the women begin to interweave, you see why she has told the stories in the order she has and she does an excellent job of tying the ends together. The ending itself was a little depressing, a little surprising in its abruptness, but on the whole fitting to the story. A good read, a fast read, worth the time if you need something to get you to the weekend.
