the kind of thing that is written so well that you spend half of the time reading it thinking to yourself, "how did he know to add that sentence that just made it so perfect?"

** spoiler alert ** This book was painful to read. I started and stopped reading it more than once, until I forced myself to finish it. It might be because there was a large chunk of time between when I read the first book and when I read this one, but most of what was going on didn't make much sense. The author spent a lot of time telling us what the characters were feeling, but not explaining why they felt that way. I tried to give it the benefit of the doubt since we are dealing with faeries, but at a certain point you want the characters to stop and wonder about what is going on around them. Leslie, Niall, and Irial all had this problem. It wasn't clear to me why the characters did the things they did or why they felt the way they felt. I'm not sure why Niall was in love with Leslie other than he empathized with her trauma. I empathized with the heroine's situation too so I wanted her to persevere and have a happy ending, but it seemed that everyone around her was determined to take her control away from her. It was painful to read. And the ending itself was rushed and left a lot unexplained. I assume that is for the sequel.

Reminded me of Goethe's "Sorrows of Young Werther" but in actuality, it's nothing like it. I think Voltaire is somewhat more didactic and in the end, appears to be an optimist. Maybe an 'optimist wounded' [by life] is more accurate, but an optimist nevertheless. Thanks to the footnotes in this edition, you don't really miss out on Voltaire's commentary on the people and happenings of his day (18th century) which is nice, but it served to interrupt the flow of reading every now and again. I think it was a good choice to have included them. This book is surprisingly modern. There's still a lot to be learned of tolerance and patience from this guy who reportedly had great influence over the founding fathers of America (Franklin, Washington, Jefferson) and I'm sure his ideas trickled into our Constitution. Anyway, Voltaire's Candide is afflicted yet sunny, terrible yet breezy. I think it's a must read for people who enjoy a bit of philosophizing.
This is a great book that addresses the issue of race and makes you consider how you, personally, react or respond to others of another race, particularly African American.

The first Buddhist book I ever read.
I didn't like David at all but kind of understood him toward the end. Interesting subject. This is not a "happy" book.
I'm a huge fan of paranormal romance books, although I admit that I am somewhat new to the genre. I've read several of the most popular series of books in this genre (Immortals After Dark and Black Dagger Brotherhood, etc.) so I really didn't expect to fall in love with another series like I did those. WRONG! While these books are more about action than sex - it totally works for these characters and this series. Cat and Bones have such a delicious love/hate relationship at first. (Well, all the hate being on Cat's side.) It was fun to watch it bloom into something more. If anyone reading this remembers the TV show Moonlighting, you'll appreciate this book. Cat and Bones have this great back and forth banter that is always laced with a little bit of sex. While they might be arguing - you know they're both thinking about what it's like to make out with the other one. That element alone makes this worth reading. All that aside - the concept is great. Cat - the half human/half vampire who hunts and kills vamps. Bones - the 240 year old vampire who hunts the bad vamps for money. I can't wait to sink my teeth into the rest of the series. (And yes - that is such a bad pun to use when describing a vampire book. But, I.DO.NOT.CARE.) :)
is there something i'm missing here? more fantasies about disaffected pretty gay boys doing drugs and having sex to cartoonish degrees. when i say that i mean EVERY character is gay, EVERY character does drugs, and EVERY character thinks about nothing but sex. CONSTANTLY. i don't get it. to me these characters are unrealistic and unrelatable. this book is better than Guide and i should say that Cooper is not without flair. he has a knack for cadence and pace and his imagery is rather vivid. he also has enough sense to keep the book under 150 pages, making the thing just shy of barely bearable. 0 for 2 Mr. Cooper.

I'm not one for touchy-feely self help books, but this one was recommended by a friend and it tought me a wonderful lesson that I still hold onto today - don't take everything so damn personally.
