Yang's American Born Chinese was the recipient of this year's Printz Award - the first graphic novel to be presented with this honor. The book is divided into three stories that are interwoven: The first centers around Jin Wang, a Chinese-American who desires to be the same as everyone else. This is difficult for him as one of two Asian people in the third grade. The book chronicles his experiences in grade school into high school, complete with bullying from the in-crowd, and a major lack of friends. One day, he falls for a girl...unfortunately, she is all-American. Does Jin Wang have a shot with her? The second story is the legend of the Monkey King, who is not satisfied with being the most powerful monkey in the world. There is an incident at a dinner party which leads to his self-hatred - he no longer wants to be a monkey, and attempts to be greater than a god... The third story focuses on all of the negative stereotypes Americans have about Chinese people. Chin-Kee is the charicature of all of these, from the buck teeth and yellow skin, to the thick accent, to the fortune cookie-like sayings. Unfortunately, Chin-Kee, Danny's cousin, comes to visit him every year at his school. Danny, one of the popular high school kids, finds himself transferring from high school to high school shortly after these visits. How can he save his reputation? I liked how the stories were brought together in the end, and thought that Yang did a wonderful job conveying his points. This was a quick read with great artwork, and a monkey reminiscient of the "Evil Monkey" from the Family Guy series. Except this one does not reside in Chris's closet...

Seminary Coop Bookstore member Penny Blubaugh's debut YA novel. This novel reads like a collection of fractured fairy tales woven into the fabric of a world much like our own. You find yourself wanting to know more about this world and especially, the main character, Mama Inez. She conducts the orchestra of first person narratives that gives "balance" to the world. A magical and satisfying tale extolling the importance of storytelling. Although marketed and published by Harper Teen, this could easily work for upper-middle grades, or young readers age 10 & up.

This book is really neat in its use of cartoon to express bigger concepts. It is very humorously written and intelligent. It teaches you briefly about the situation in Iran, and takes a look at varying cultures. It's quite interesting and a quick read.

This book was strange to follow at first, but you get the hang of it quickly. I can see why a lot of people were turned off by the name dropping, the vivid descriptions, and the sometimes pretentious writing, but I didn't let it get to me because underneath it all lies a very interesting story. You learn enough about the main characters that you feel like you know them. All in all, worth your time.

I started reading this book as I normally do at 9 p.m. I always read prior to going to bed. Unfortunately, I couldn't go to sleep after reading a few chapters. You would think that if a book made you a little jumpy, that you wouldn't keep reading it, but I couldn't stop thinking about this book and so the next night I finished it. It was good. Ghost stories are kind of spooky to me, but this one was full of twists and turns. The story is about a boy who sees things in trees. His mother hated him and blamed him for her unhappiness and ultimate death from cancer. (Kind of a sad thing to think about that this kid grew up with a mother telling him, everything was his fault.) She dies and they move to a town for a new start with a step mother. The little boy is lucky in that his step mother believes him when he tells her about the ghosts he can see because she has seen them too. Together they help to eliminate a bad ghost and all of the ghosts hanging around are able to be at peace and leave on a bus. Kind of spooky, but very fun to read. Children with a good imagination will enjoy this book. I would recommend it to good readers at the age of 10 and up.
I always wait for Maeve Binchy's next book and she did not disappoint. No one writes about their characters and brings them alive the way she does. If you are a fan of her work, you will love the way that she brings so many of her characters together from previous books and throws in some new ones. If you have never read her, you will still love her and will probably be tempted to pick up some of her older book. She's always a must read.
