Wow, this was as fascinating a book as I've read in a long time. Interestingly, I read the Swanson's followup book, "Bloody Crimes" first, and now understand fully the praise for this, first book.

I had heard of this book for years, so decided to get it from the library. It is not the kind of book you read from cover to cover. I was particularly interested in the food preservation, oddments and herb sections. This is a book about self-sufficient living, so it also has interesting things like a diagram of a hog with an X placed exactly where you should shoot it. I also enjoyed the recipes for pickled pig's feet and scrapple, amont others. This would be a great book to own, if you actually were living a "homesteading" lifestyle.

I started it one night and had to make an effort to put it down, as I knew I needed to sleep...I can tell from the start it will be easy to pull an all nighter with this one. I had that same feeling with East of Eden and The Grapes of Wrath..this could be our modern day classic...!!!

This novel presents a fresh take on the hard-boiled detective story. There are several gasp-worthy twists that had me dropping my jaw and reading later into the night than I should have. The author's thorough grasp of her characters and their progressions was tremendously impressive. The subtle presentation of how dramatic events divide a character's life into 'before X' and 'after X' seem to be the only thing they have in common--well, that and suburban Dublin. Some of the graphic details were a little hard for me to take; but that is another testament to the author's skill in creating a world that seemed so real on the page. Ms. French deserves the acclaim she received for this one--and some applause, too.
This book is thought provoking. The introduction that explains the premise and the chapter on the temple, I believe it is called "Rending the Veil" was excellent. It should be read by anyone who has trouble with thinking the temple ceremony is demeaning to women. The rest of the book is pretty forgettable -- but that may be because it has been almost 20 years since I read it. Many may be put off by knowing that the authors were both later excommunicated. If you are in this camp, I do not recommend this book.

Alice in Wonderland + Pan's Labyrinth + Labyrinth + Aesop's Fables = a book you don't need to read because you already know the story and it was done better the first time.
The best of the book undoubtedly is the music that matches each part in the life of Penny Lane. The Beatles company Pennny Lane while creating the Lonely Hearts Club ... a club which above all seeks to bring her friends over boyfriends.

Well, that book was the opposite of worthwhile. I have GOT to stop adding books to my "to read" list based only on an interesting title! While I'm at it, I'll go ahead and remove any other Francis Schaeffer books lying in wait on that ominous list...
so this is the edition i read, but it was a later printing and was softcover.
