I just finished all of the first six Vonnegut novels (except for the early Player Piano). It has been quite an experience over three weeks. In God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater, Vonnegut clearly and relentlessly makes his case for Humanism. As a cry for all of us to love one another without reservations, and without expectation of material rewards for such love, the book is effective. However, as a work of engaging literature it falls short. I tired of the many pages of the Rosewater family history. Also uninteresting was the bland midwestern town of Rosewater: of course that's how Vonnegut deliberately portrayed it, but I felt queasy after reading a few chapters of the dead-end lives there. So, after reading the six early Vonnegut novels, Slaughterhouse-Five and Cat's Cradle are the standouts - entirely original and deeply moving. Mother Night (which is a separate tightly focused tragedy, distinct from his other early novels) and Sirens of Titan are also classics in their own right. I thought Breakfast of Champions very funny but ultimately too over-the-top crazy even for me. Summary: Sirens of Titan (1959): 5 stars Mother Night (1961): 4 stars Cat's Cradle (1963): 5 stars God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater (1965): 3 stars Slaughterhouse-Five (1969): 5 stars Breakfast of Champions (1973): 3 stars Hail to Kurt Vonnegut! Your spirit is out there traveling in a chrono synclastic infundibulum to Tralfamadore and the universe beyond!

Not bad. The artwork is quite good, although at times it can be too abstract to clearly support the plot and distinguish the characters. The cover art is an authentically realized throwback to the turn of the twentieth century, a theme which is loosely touched on by the contents of the book.

Snoop: What Your Stuff Says About You by Sam Gosling, Ph.D. is a book about the psychology of possessions. Gosling has studied people’s stuff and living spaces for awhile now, and has gotten to the point where he can tell a number of things about a person just by examining a bedroom, bathroom or office. It was interesting to see the generalities that he has come up with during the course of his research (apparently, having sports memorabilia on your walls makes you more likely to be conservative, and having maps of far away places makes you more likely to be liberal) and to hear his defense of stereotypes - which people use to make mental shortcuts, freeing their brains up to do more important and necessary thinking. While I did some skimming and skipped one chapter completely, I found Gosling’s book to be a fascinating description of how people’s personalities are reflected in their spaces. I also hope none of my co-workers read it and learn more about me from my rather chaotic desk!

The first time I have read one of her books and loved it. Very similar to Jodi Picoult. Will definitely be looking out for some more of her books.

A team of investigative scientists encounter a planet with ESP that creates hallucinations based on your past fears/desires/guilt. Such a neat idea, and yet SO BORING. Both the movie and the book were like taking an ambien.

2010 Monarch nominee -although I didn’t like that some countries had an entire page and some only had a ¼, it was kind of cool to see how the story from other countries goes -great ending

This is one of those novels that I am happy to report I was completely wrong about. I had never had any desire to read a massive book about whaling but there is so much more to Moby Dick than just Captain Ahab and the white whale. There are metaphors for life, for writing, for the role of literature. It's really a brilliant book and I understand and fully support the hype.
