I really like this author and I've read a lot of her work. I'm not sure how I felt about them always singing. It got kinda annoying. But it was a very nice, relateable story about looks not being everything. I liked Ivi and how she was very child like, and needed approval and admiration.

Buen retrato de la situación de los mineros en Chile, pero la historia del predicador/evangelista es poco atractiva, predecible y un cliché.

Sentimental tale about American father and daughter living in Shanghai before WWII, their estrangement, his internment, and their reunion in South Pasadena many years later.

Achingly beautiful. This goes into the category of word erotica as far as I'm concerned. The concept is brilliant and unique. The characters interesting and heartbreaking. My only regret is that it has an ending.

In theory, a great book. In practice, just a bit too repetitious for my taste.

I am a huge fan of Tolkien, and I loved the insight this book provided. It's kinda like the missing piece just landed in my lap with this one.

I couldn't even give this book the 30 page test I give all books. Though it was recommended to me, I just couldn't relate to the characters or writing style...
Perhaps an interesting choice to read while on vacation abroad, this was an enjoyable celebration of nerdy history love. One of the things I really like about Sarah Vowell is that she clearly does love America and all of its craziness - she just doesn't think there's any excuse to look at our history and ourselves through rose-colored glasses. Erica commented that whenever she reads Sarah Vowell, she always imagines the essay as read by the author herself, and thinks Vowell's stuff is better heard than read. I do agree, but still enjoy reading about the joys of roadtrips to random American historical sites with a variety of sidekicks/drivers, and what can be discovered about our country, our culture, and ourselves through close examination of our history. Also? I would sign up for a Sarah Vowell historical tour of America in a heartbeat!

I enjoyed the book, but am a little confused about who its target audience is. It was written more like a book for a teenager, but so much of the story depends on the 80s pop-culture references that I doubt current teens would find it engaging. The story follows Polly from 7th grade into her sophomore year of college through eight *relationships* with boys that shape her life. Music and boys. Boys and music. Relationships with parents and friends. Cliques. Sex. Drugs. Alcohol. A lot of smoking. It's not one I'll pass along to my daughter.
