Overall, the book provided a strong start for a female/assassin lead. At times the book was morbid and candid, but helped paint a picture of the main character's priorities. Griguhl, Adam and Vinca all provided light-hearted moments to keep the book from becoming dark.

10/4/2009: Nigh overwhelming. I could not, right now, tell you what this book is about, to be quite honest. Possibilities: connection (utter impossibility of, absolute miracle of), love (miracle/perplexity of), time (oh my god, time), human beings as glaciers. Prose poured out of a jug; read this in a day, partially out of necessity due to it being a school assignment, but about a third of the way through, Woolf's particular rhythms, fluid shifts in point of view, meld of the exterior/interior just carries one. Master of the semi-colon, parentheses within parentheses --Woolf is a writer after my own heart. 5/30/2013: I think I'll read this once a year. 6/4/2013: I LOVE THIS BOOK SO MUCH.

Great read, an important book, useful advice, a text that would be good for someone familiar with a lot of postmodern thinkers

I was sad to hear that Kurt Vonnegut recently died. I'm listening to an audio recording of the author reading the novel, which adds a new dimension to my appreciation of it. Its imaginative, silly, wry, wise, and sad.

Not as funny as others, but more introspective.

** spoiler alert ** This book was really creative. I'm going to get the sequel ASAP. This book is about a girl named Meghan Chase who is carrying on her normal life, trying to live until her 16th birthday. When it comes, rather than the happy-happy romance she expected, she finds out her brother was replaced with an evil changeling sent by King machina in the Iron Fey Kingdom. She discovers she herself is Oberon's daughter, the King of the Winter Court. She ends up basically giving up her own life for her family. She's alive and fine, of course, but I just loved how she never gave up and always came back to her family. The romance between her and Ash was sweet too :)
Jeeves is really delightful. Easy reads, short story type set up that makes it easy to read in between kids. The only problem is that after you've read two or three books all the stories start sounding a lot alike.

The author has found an ideal balance between old-fashioned charm on the one hand and a contemporary, honest way of addressing difficult family issues on the other. The characters are also very well developed and have their distinct roles and personalitis: one is artsy and imaginative, one is a tomboy, the little one is crazy about animals, and the oldest has taken on the nurturing role after their mother died (just one example of where the book is sweet but unflinchingly real and a little sad). The absent-minded professor father is guilty of just enough benign neglect to let the girls get themselves into a pickle, but he's there to help in a loving way when they need him most. I expect that this will become a series, and we will see more of the adventures of the Penderwick girls in the future.
