It is a good smooth read once it gets into a groove. It just feels like it takes forever to get there. In some places, the story goes into great detail of places and events, in others, seemingly important information is just left out, making the work feel... uneven, at least until the final chapters when the storylines finally converge. This is supposed to be the start of the D.D. Warren series, but to be honest I was not thrilled with D.D. She was wrong more than she was right, doesn't solve ANYTHING and is late to the party for the finale. If this is D.D. Warren, I don't know if I want to continue. On its own, the mystery is good, the story well though out (though choppy), and while certainly not the best Mystery I have ever read, or anything special...it did in the end manage to hold my interest.

If you have ever watched the movie "Braveheart" then you are familiar with Isabella of France who married Edward II of England. Unfortunately her depiction in the movie is completely wrong. While Isabella married the "poof" or "homosexual" Edward II, the son and heir of Edward "the Longshanks" I of England, she did so AFTER the elder Edward was dead. So he would have never been at the wedding or sent her to meet and confer with William Wallace. She was a small child when Wallace was executed. Isabella was a very smart and strong woman, even for her time. Also, unlike her movie portrayal, she did not despise her husband until much, much later in her life.They had 4 children together. Granted, he pissed her off and she got back at him by successfully invading England, deposing him and placing their son Edward III on the throne, then proceeded to turn around and commit crimes against England and the people that loved her. Typical politician. In fact, with out Isabella doing what she did, most of the democratic freedoms that the world enjoys today may never have come about. That is not to say she would have enjoyed that. She was a firm believer in the rule of a king and their exercising their prerogative. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I read it fairly quickly because the writing flows so well. Weir is amazing in her detail and historical story telling.

While waiting for the latest Mary Russell book to become available at the library, I found myself enjoying this short story about the first couple of months of Holmes and Russell's relationship. I enjoyed reading things from Holmes viewpoint again like in Locked Rooms. The book also includes a 'tweeter view' by Mary Russell and someone else. Fun, but not really accurate to time (Mary would be 111 this year.) As an added bonus, the first two chapters of Pirate King are included. Yay! It was totally worth the $0.99 to purchase this e-book.

Do not read this book if you're feeling in any way down or depressed. I've read this book twice and both times bawled my eyes out at the ending. It's a love story, but a tragic and terrible one, both beautiful and heartbreaking.
