I loved the author's attitude to the art of perfume making, but this book partly reads as a "how-to" book. But it does give you great insight into deconstructing the fragrance you wear. But for some, (me included part of the time), sometimes you just want to enjoy a beautiful scent, like a beautiful piece of art, without breaking it down beyond the sum of its parts.

Sci-Fi is a difficult genre to describe and recommend. Given its lattitudes for fantastical and somewhat magical storylines, it turns many people off. 2001 would have to be the exception for two reasons. First, it is science-fiction with a heavy emphasis on empiricism, which is why it is no wonder that Arthur C. Clarke's imaginative creations have in fact become real and/or the basis for aero-space design. A visionary, way ahead of the technological curve, Clarke created a story fifty years ago that is realistic and futuristic today. Second, 2001 is considered THE standard for the sci-fi genre. If you read one sci-fir book in your life, if you want to engage in conversatrions concerning the potential effect of technology on society, this should be the one sci-fi book you should read.

As the second book in this series, I strongly suggest you read On A Pale Horse first. This is a series that really makes a lot more sense in order. While it isn't my least favorite in the series, I am not a huge fan of this novel. I tend to it in my periodic rereads of the series just for completeness. The scenes with the BEM or fantasy realm that Satan sends Norton to in particular really drag for me, and I often just skim them at this point.
