I LOVED this book! The plot is deceptively simple: A Red Lobster restaurant in Connecticut is being closed down by corporate headquarters, and this is the last day the restaurant will be open for business. The story is told from the viewpoint of the conscientious manager of this Red Lobster, Manny, who has worked there for 10 years. The interrelationships and conversations between the employees of The Lobster are perfectly written about. It has the a bittersweet feeling of hanging on to dreams in spite of the bites that life takes out of one's soul. I will continue to think about these characters for a long time to come.
So far this is not what I expected. Not sure what to make of it yet.

This book was so fun and easy. I didn't expect it to be so compelling though. I really like Papa Georges, at first I didn't. I suddenly have a new fascination with clocks. It is definently worth reading and even though it looks big it goes very quickly (the first 45 pages don't even have words). I saw that it was a book on tape at our library and I was quite perplexed. The pictures are more than half the fun. The most unique book, picture book, I have ever read.

This book is so brief and moves so fast that there is not really any time to get attached to it or its characters. I enjoyed reading it but didnt walk away from it thinking it was outstanding.

Taking place mostly in Brooklyn (and coincidentally right in the neighbourhood where I was staying while I was there last week!), dancergirl is about Alicia and her friends after an online film project gets out of hand. Her friend Charlie, a budding filmmaker, shoots some intentionally voyeuristic videos of Ali (aka dancergirl) dancing, and posting them on Zube (this story’s version of Youtube) under the moniker shyboy. After a few of the videos go viral, and gaining some popularity at school, a different video pops up on Zube. One that Ali and her friends didn’t film. They soon realize that their pet project has gotten out of hand when Ali finds herself with a stalker. What ensues is a mystery-solving adventure of sorts, with the underlying cautionary tale lingering in the background. I received the ARC of dancergirl from Netgalley and was excited to get a chance to read it before it’s release in November. This was a very enjoyable read. The main characters were well-developed, the story was well-paced and throwing in some twists and turns, it makes for a great novel. The writing is witty, causing me to actually laugh out loud at how Tanzman describes Ali’s nemesis Samantha’s eyes. Writing style notwithstanding, I love stories that have to do with dance and, as mentioned above, I found it a strange coincidence that I was just at those very locations and streets in Brooklyn last week that were mentioned in the book. dancergirl is extremely relevant in this day and age, where young kids & teens are putting themselves out there on the internet, not realizing how much privacy they are giving up and who some of these people could be that are watching your videos. It shows that internet fame isn’t always what it’s cracked up to be, coming with some grave consequences and potentially alienating yourself from the actual people around you. A little fun fact that a fellow book blogger friend mentioned to me, regarding the author’s last name, ‘Tanz” is actually “dance” in German! Look for this book on shelves November 15, 2011! Review can also be found here!

This is the second book in the speaker trilogy. The first being Ender's Game and the third being Xenocide. Although this story is pretty self contained, reading Ender's Game first will make the story more enjoyable. This book is completely different from Ender's Game though. A completely different story that Ender finds himself involved in. Highly suggested reading.

I could not get into this book. The characters did not draw me in and hold me. The language was sometimes confusing and you get these + signs that I never quite got. I read about 100 pages of this and put it down. It may finish stronger but to me it was not worth the time to get there.

This book series I just enjoyed. It wasn't a great work of art like Jane Austen but a page turner none the less (for me anyway).

This is a great, spare book, much happier than Les ames grises by Claudel. In the middle section, I starting wondering if this book were going anywhere -- and then BOOM, at the end, everything falls into place with a great surprise! A bit Life of Pi-esque in that respect. Very simple, clear French.

A friend of mine picked this novel for our book club since he had previously enjoyed another novel by David Mitchell. I have an affinity for Dutch art/writings/etc as it is, so I thought I'd enjoy this book right off the bat. Despite that, it took me about 60 pages to really warm up to it; most likely because I'm not an avid reader and I had to have Google handy to look up quite a few terms. After that, the story just grew on me as well as Mitchell's voice. His strings words together and it resembles, in certain parts, more closely a painting than prose. This book really was a pleasure to read (and the first book club book of 4 or 5 - including the one I picked - that I actually finished). I have no doubt I will be picking this book up again.
