This is a little embarrassing to admit, but I've been reading a lot of YA fantasy/SF novels aloud to my husband while he paints his new 40k army. I guess if you're going to dork out and regress, it might as well be all the way. So I pulled this novel out of the vaults--my fifth grade English teacher assigned it as part of an inspired introduction to genre fiction unit. This was our introduction to science fiction. I blame her for launching a number of excessively awkward adolescences. Anyway, this book is better and more exciting than I remembered. It's about an alternate future, though a near future, where aliens called tripods have taken over Earth, putting humans under their control by capping all the adults with a mind control device. There is a small band of rebels in the mountains who have managed to escape capping and the novel follows three boys who are running away to find these rebels in the mountains. Very exciting stuff. And there's a really wonderful and real pettiness and sense of competition among the three boys that sets this novel apart from others like it.

I love to pick this up and read from any page. At once heavenly and thoroughly earth bound, Rumi always gives me food for thought.

Wills does a creditable job of reporting what Europeans wrote about various parts of the world in 1688, but the book obviously suffers from a lack of indigenous writing. In writing about West Africa, for example, he writes, “We are disproportionately dependent of Europeans feeling their way along the coast of Africa.” Chapter 21: The World of the Great Sultan” talks of the decaying of the Ottoman empire. It contains an excellent excerpt of an autobiography of Osman Agha, a practicing Muslm from Romania, Gavurlarin Esiri (prisoner of the Unbelievers) (available in the German edition Der Gefangene der Giauren, 1962) For the rest of his information on the Muslim world, the author has depended on non Muslim, Europeans and American sources. This is an excellent book only for those who want to know what European visitors thought of various parts of the world in 1688.

This was one of the first surrealistic novels I had read, and since then Murakami has been my favorite author. Toru is such a believable character despite all of the unnatural occurences and extraordinary people he meets. I think that anyone who loves to read should read this book at least once.
Excellent!

Love the way the book jumps from scene to scene. It's like reading a movie. Very good!

if you can get to the end of this book and not be simultaneously crushed and ecstatic then we really like different books.

I am working on this plan now. I end on Oct. 31. I hope that I can stick with it. Was an inspirational book for eating well and taking care of myself.
