Bill Bryson, humorist and lover of history, science and all kinds of interesting trivia, has long been one of my favorite authors. Ever since I picked up his very funny hiking adventure, A Walk in the Woods, I’ve been hooked. The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid is Bryson’s childhood memoir. He grew up during the 50′s in Des Moines, Iowa, and that reminded me a lot of my own childhood. Most of the book consists of normal, but very funny, memories of growing up: “The makers of sneakers also thoughtfully pocked the soles with numberless crevices, craters, chevrons, mazes, crop circles, and other rubbery hieroglyphs, so that when you stepped in a moist pile of dog shit, as you most assuredly did within three bounds of leaving the house, they provided additional absorbing hours of pastime while you cleaned them out with a stick, gagging quietly but oddly content.” Occasionally, Bryson throws in his two cents about our society, political landscape, etc., but it’s subtle enough and witty enough not to offend you…much. Since the book deals with childhood in the midwest, I was surprised by Bryson’s use of profanity. It didn’t seem to fit here. I would have loved to recommend it to my teenaged sons, but those few “f” words made up my mind for me. At any rate, I will say this book is hilarious. I laughed so hard, so many times, that my children came running to see if I was alright. It just goes to show you that a few burnt meals, and the inadvertent wearing of lime green capri pants doesn’t hold you back – at least as far as this terrific author is concerned.

This is the second book I’ve read by Gaston Leroux, the first being The Phantom of the Opera. What recommends Leroux most is his unique style. He was a journalist before becoming an author and he writes his books in the style of a turn of the century press release. There is very little moralizing and few philosophical asides. Instead he mainly sticks to the facts. My issue with this story is that I found it uninteresting. I really didn’t care to try to figure out the mystery, or find out who the perpetrator was. The only character I found interesting was the victim and she was not given much action in the novel, other than screaming. Outdated notions of propriety caused most of the roadblocks in discovering the identity of the attacker. The writing was very clumsy at times. An example: “I was interested only in the health of Mademoiselle Strangerson, which was daily improving, when something occurred that is even more mysterious than – than the mystery of The Yellow Room! ‘Impossible!’ I cried, ‘What could be more mysterious than that?’” I’m not sure if an exchange like that was supposed to be humorous, but I found it very funny and ridiculous. As a teenager I went through an extended Sherlock Holmes/ Herucle Poriet phase. This novel had the most similarity with Sherlock Holmes. It had a similar crime-solving genius/ confused friend dynamic going on between the two main characters. Similar to Sherlock Holmes, the novel is told from the point of view of the unenlightened friend, who is only given occasional clues as to what his more intelligent companion is thinking. This serves as a handy plot device because it keeps the reader in the dark on many important points until the author sees fit to reveal them. However, Holmes and Watson are infinitely more charismatic characters than the main characters of this novel. It seems unfair to compare Leroux with Arthur Conan Doyle, who is one of the great geniuses of mystery writing, but with all the similarities I found it impossible not to. Perhaps if I had read this novel first, I would have been more impressed. “Logic will upset you if you use it indiscriminately.” P.58

(Based on a Goodreads Giveaway Proof Copy) Hilary Winston's comedy writing career shows in her novel - several times during the book I found myself unable to stop from laughing out loud. However, for first half of the book that entertaining aspect did not quite outweigh just how uncomfortable it was to read, plain in simple. Not because of anything inappropriate or too personal, but because it felt too much like the only basis for the novel was to respond to her ex-boyfriend's book with her own as some sort of retaliation (as even the title shows). Listing off everything that was wrong about her ex and their relationship over and over didn't come across as funny most of the time, it just came off as sad. And if she had mentioned one more time that she was "the fat-assed girlfriend" in her ex's book I might have just put it down; every reference to HIS book (and there were a lot) reminded me that it was the only reason for this one and made me uncomfortable for the author's sake all over again. The second half of the book focuses largely on Winston's life after the break up and so was much more entertaining and seemed to make me think, "Hilary, I know your ex and his book were a huge part of your life, but the other parts of your life are so much more worth talking about!" The last part of the book resolves things with her and her ex, easing my frustration with the whole first half ("ohh, so there WAS a point to this other than revenge"), but ending in a way that was too sudden, vague, cheesy and "moral-of-the-story" for my taste, trying too hard to wrap up a story that just wasn't constructed well enough to wrap up. Over all the brutal honesty of the book is what makes it appealing and interesting, but it's just not that amazing of a book. It won't leave you thinking, it won't present anything new to the table, and over all it will make itself easily forgotten.
