I bought this book before the hype of the movie because I heard that it was "the book to read" by my boyfriend's brother's girlfriend. It is pretty slow to get into but once you do, you cannot put it down! It has actually made me really want to try and read the second one next - I've heard it is faster paced in the beginning!

I could NOT put this book down. Anticipation was on every page, as was the excitement. The author's descriptive writing put me right there with the characters.. I could almost smell the blood!

I bury myself the best I can in old books, but somehow my old books keep dragging me back to the latest "breaking news". Take this one, for example, inspired by the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill. Ten days after I finished reading it, I turned on the TV to discover the Santa Barbara beaches once more mired in oil, its seabirds blackened and endangered. Sure, it's nice to be reminded of old books I like, but this kind of deja vu I don't need. For years I recalled Sleeping Beauty as one of Macdonald's finest novels, principally for the way he combined the oil spill theme with the sudden disappearance of a possibly suicidal woman. Her family is in the oil business, and when detective Lew Archer first meets her, she is on the beach, trying to rescue a dying, oil-soaked grebe. "A handsome young woman,” Archer describes her, “with eyes as angry as the bird's." Within the novels first few pages, the central Macdonald themes of angry nature, family greed, and the haunted young are combined in one inspired metaphor. Unfortunately, what I failed to remember is that this metaphor does not remain central to the plot, which soon becomes an extraordinarily complicated collection of protective camouflage and weary masks worn by a large cast of characters, some hiding petty, and some great crimes. Don't get me wrong. This is an effective, well-constructed novel, written in elegant prose. It just wasn't the great novel I had held in memory, the novel I hoped it would once again be.

Doch dieser und seine Freundin Anna haben nicht nur mit einem psychopathischen Serienmörder zu kämpfen, sondern auch mit der Verfassung des Polizeichefs, der wegen seiner Sauferei die Ermittlungen nicht mehr im Griff hat. Spannend ist der dritte Roman um Sonderermittler Christian Beyer auf jeden Fall, wenn ich ihn auch nicht als Thriller bezeichnen würde. Elemente eines Thrillers sind vorhanden, aber ein solider Krimi trifft es meines Erachtens besser, auch wenn der Verlag "Thriller" auf das Buch geschrieben hat. Dafür fehlt das absolut fesselnde, was einen das Buch nicht aus der Hand legen läßt. Dennoch ist das Buch sehr flüssig zu lesen. Und auch das Thema ist gut durchdacht, eine gute Geschichte. Lediglich am Schreibstil muss ich etwas hadern, zu aufgesetzt wirken auf mich manchmal zu detaillierte Beschreibungen von Nebensächlichkeiten. Alles in allem legt Marina Heib mit Tödliches Ritual einen guten Krimi vor mit Schwächen, die aber durch eine gute Story und einen leicht zu lesenden Schreibstil ausgeglichen werden.

This is a great book filled with information about a variety of organizations. A good concise history of Central Asia, and a tale of Modern day Central Asia. Maybe its because I am going into the Peace Corps, or because I want to do so in Central Asia, but this book hit literally so many notes with me, that I can not even begin to describe why I like this book. This may change in about 3 years, but whose to say. All I can tell you is currently, this is a book I will reread, and I dont do that often.
