Still mulling over the impact of this book. Unlike most important anthro books these days, Graeber writes with clarity and wit in a language that people might actually speak to each other. Graeber is post-postmodern in the sense that he is all about building grand narratives if in a more critical and measured way than most. The intial review of recent exchange theory is helpful and his rereading of Mauss as a political thinker both simultaneously helped me put into words what always bugged me about The Gift and is a tour de force well tour of Kwakiutl and Maori symbolic universes. While I usually hate looking to the ancient greeks to explain things once and for all, his contrast of Parmenidian (and Platonic) in essence categorical positivism and Heraclitian process/action/pattern theories of self and society puts this contrast in a frame which western philosophy heads (those fuckers) might actually get. And there are some choice Foucault disses as well. Still I'm not so sure I buy his rereading of Marx. Or that his big discovery -- there is a fundamental distinction between hidden and displayed potentiality is 1. that earth shattering or 2. that universalizable. Also his conclusion is disappointing. He moves far too swiftly for my tastes from an abbreviated treatment of the "fetish" in african contexts (a treatment which is particularly impoverished compared to his approach to wampum or even the hau of the gift) to his own malagasy materials. He could be read as saying hey look my research is another example of the fetish which is probably not what he means. Still overall I recommend it pretty highly.

This is like watching an episode of Lost. It's so good, but it's so bad. And the only reason it's bad is because you want MORE. You know the Prophecy. You want them to get there already! AAh, it's killing me. Either way, besides that glaring feeling of emptiness I come away with, this book was better than the last. First, Percy Jackson is back. Woot woot. Percy is still awesome. I still don't get why he hearts Annabeth so much, but that's just my opinion. Somehow throughout the Percy Jackson original series, I never really thought she was awesome. Maybe this whole different POV thing Riordan's taking up will enlighten me later on. I know they're made for each other, but still - I'm waiting to actually feel that romantic tug. Second, the other characters are cool too! I thought Hazel and Frank were so much more interesting than Piper and Leo. Well, Leo was cool, but whatever. And maybe it's because Jason was a complete stranger that didn't know who he was...but Percy shines compared to him. Maybe it's because he's a stoic Roman? Shrug. It'd be interesting to see how they react to each other. This book made me laugh out loud multiple times. My favorite is probably the whole "silly Chinese Canadian baby man" quote. Bahaha. Anyway...now I will have to wait another year or something insane (ZOMG) to see how this major quest will continue.

Another book from Molly. I really like this author for the way she writes books for youth, they are not the teeny-bopper-dating-break-up type of books so many have written for this age. They are well thought out and easy to read. This one is about orphans, and the plot is different than you think it will be. Book 1... Molly and I are looking forward to Book 2!

**** 1/2 I really adored this book and the more I think about it, the more it grows on me. This will be a great book club pick, as readers debate the virtues (or lack of) of the three sisters. The first person plural narrative was in my way at first (*who* was speaking?) but as I got more wrapped up in the characters and the story, I (mostly) let that go. It's an unusual perspective for storytelling and I'd love to know why Brown chose it. (Also more fodder for book club discussion!)

I like a book that doesn't give anything away, where you can't guess the end after the first few chapters.
