To Cedric, for being a particularly good finder. To Fred and George, for always making me laugh through my tears. To Luna, for believing in what she couldn't see. To Ginny, for having that blazing look in her eyes. And to Harry, for letting me grow up with him. Lastly, to Jo...for words that are re-born from the ashes and filled with Phoenix song every time I read them.

Picked it back up to re-read this summer with Brad. Still think it's fantastic! Always fun to go back to a book and see all the details you forgot. I love this book! Great descriptive writing and an enthralling story.

Ishmael Beah, a young boy who lives in Sierra Leone was enjoying life with his family and friends until he had his life turned upside down by war. Rebels invaded his town and killed everyone they saw causing him to flee. He was separated from his family and friends. He roamed for days and went through destroyed villages, seeing all of the dead people gruesomely murdered. After awhile he gets picked up by the army. Where he learned to kill mercilessly and use drugs to numb him from everything around him. For years he killed rebels in the army; he killed hundreds of people. All of this became normal to him; every day of killing was a normal day, until one day UNICEF picks him up. Ishmael goes through rehab and has a difficult time to becoming normal again. He learns to make friends and socialize. He spends a lot of time in rehab, until he is finally reunited with a family member. Until his world was once again turned upside down. I give this book 4.5 out of 5 stars. It was beautifully written. It is a true story and it keeps you on your toes every page turned. This book is full of action and is filled with many different emotions. The only reason I gave this book 4.5 out of 5 was the ending. I won’t give away the ending, but it was not up to expectations. I would definitely recommend this book if you can stomach the gore and gruesomeness of this book. If you need to pick up a book, this is the one.

I picked up this book at a used bookstore in Seattle while waiting for court. I liked the cover. The writing was fantastic. I won't spoil the book, but I found the subtle surprise plot element delightful, once I figured it out. I recently bought another used book by the same author at the same store and look forward to reading it soon.
