I've had a great streak of big, thick books about families. First there was Freedom, by Jonathan Franzen, then Freddie and Fredericka by Mark Helprin. Now, another good entry comes from Ms. Smith, an author I've heard about, but never read. I enjoyed wandering through the Beasley family's life, seeing the perspective from many different family members. I look forward to reading more of Zadie Smith.

SO deliciously good in every respect. If you are a fantasy fan and haven't read it you're sad sad soul

Poorly organized; overwrought, faux-prudish prose wallowing in Lord Rochester's "debauchery" without telling us what exactly he did other than visit prostitutes (sometimes? often? daily?); random plates of purported historical interest whose relevance was often doubtful. I did learn enough about the reign of Charles II to want to read more of the ribald poetry.

An interesting journal of a difficult spiritual journey to self-acceptance. Father Nouwen was a Belgian priest who was struck to his soul by seeing Rembrandt's "Return". He went to St. Petersburg to see it at the Hermitage. He takes each of the characters in the bible parable as depicted by Rembrtandt, and puts himself in their shoes - always focusing on his own shortcomings. He wrote over 18 other books on the spiritual life. In my view, too much agony over who you are. It is a curse to "want to be good".

As a (then) teenage liverpool fan the last game of the 89 season has stuck in my mind more than almost any other purely sporting event. The book took me back to that season of Hillsborough and the all mersey cup final and left me surprisingly touched. I'm not even sure how good a book it is really, anything relating to hillsborough and the gap between the 80s and now always gets to me but it was more readable than a lot of football books and despite being from the arsenal point of view seemed to have it's heart in the right place about why people return to that game as the end of something.
I found this quite boring, pointless, and didn't care for the characters. It's of course nicely written, but meh...

The writing was good and made me wish the story were a lot less depressing. It's one of those books that keeps your interest even as the horrible/sad events keep piling up, which is what kept me reading till the end. I liked the way the story was wrapped up and there was some amazing imagery, but I wished it could have been just a little lighter along the way.

If you can get past the first 20-30 pages, this book is hard to put down. Too "artsy" of a beginning makes it hard to get into, but the story ends up being captivating. I know the author, so that may have influenced my opinion.

我仍在读这本书-这是杰里米(Jeremy)的礼物。 我将它投入工作并放在桌子上,这样我看起来很自命不凡,而且当它变慢时我需要阅读一些东西。
